Burt Point Sewerage Plant operating after 7 years

The Burt Point Wastewater Treatment Plant

The government last week recommissioned the Burt Point Wastewater Treatment Plant which has been out of operation since it was damaged by the 2017 hurricanes.

The plant is a major one as it treats sewerage from communities including Baughers Bay, Free Bottom, Hutums Ghut, Long Bush and Road Town. While it was out of operation, untreated sewerage flowed to the sea where it posed a threat to human and marine life.

While marking the recommissioning last week, Third District Representative Julian Fraser — who has been agitating for the plant’s upgrade for years — said successive administrations that held office after the 2017 hurricanes should have brought it back online.

He commended the Dr Natalio Wheatley government for the recommission but warned them to ensure it always remains functional.

“I beseech you Premier, Director of Water and Sewerage, do whatever is necessary to keep the plant functional. Don’t let it be there and think it’s functioning when it’s not. Because if it’s not functioning, I’m going to come back and tell the people again,” Fraser said.

In the meantime, Premier Wheatley used the recommissioning ceremony to reiterate that his government is committed to solving the infrastructural challenges in the community.

“As we speak, there’s action taking place in Long Swamp, where the pumping station is being installed. Delayed is not denied. Of course, we know sometimes these things take longer than we want to. But this government remains resilient and we continue to push until we get to our ultimate goal which is to ensure the people get the standard of living they deserve,” Premier Wheatley said.
