BVI businessman nabbed in TT$193.5m cocaine bust
A 42-year-old businessman from the British Virgin Islands has been arrested in Trinidad & Tobago following the seizure of approximately 416.5 kilogrammes of cocaine valued at TT$193.5 million.
The Trinidad & Tobago Police Service said officers detained the businessman during an intelligence-led operation in the Longdenville Police District. Police also arrested two Saint Lucian nationals, aged 38 and 37.
Police have not released the names of the three men.
The operation began at 3:40 am on Wednesday, September 2, and concluded at 3:30 am the following day. Acting Assistant Commissioner of Police Kerwin Francis of the Criminal Division coordinated the exercise, while Acting Assistant Superintendent St Clair provided operational leadership. Police said their enquiries focused on the suspected concealment of illegal firearms and narcotics at premises along Pokhor Road in Longdenville.
Acting under Section 12 of Trinidad & Tobago’s Emergency Powers Regulations 2026, officers searched a residence, warehouse and the surrounding compound for firearms, narcotics and other prohibited items. During the search, officers found six large backhoe tyres mounted on rims inside the warehouse. Upon examining the tyres, they discovered rectangular packages concealed in four of them.
Police recovered 420 packages from the tyres.
Customs and Excise officers assisted the police in weighing the packages. Authorities recorded a combined weight of approximately 416.5 kilogrammes and placed the estimated street value of the drugs at TT$193,522,560.
The police arrested the BVI businessman on suspicion of offences connected with the seizure. The release did not disclose the nature of his business or provide details about his alleged connection to the premises or the cocaine.
Acting ASP St Clair later visited the scene. Police Constables Naipaul and Frankbull of the Central Division Crime Scene Investigations Unit processed the location. Officers transported the seized packages to the Special Investigations Unit in Port of Spain. They took the three detained men to the St Joseph Police Station pending further enquiries.
The Trinidad & Tobago Police Service said investigations are continuing.
