BVI engages USVI on proposed 25% import tariff

Rymer.

Acting Premier Kye Rymer has confirmed that the BVI government is in discussions with USVI Governor Albert Bryan Jr. following reports of a proposed 25% import tariff on goods from the British Virgin Islands and additional fees for non-residents traveling between the two territories.

“The Government of the Virgin Islands assures the public that constructive dialogue has commenced with the Bryan administration regarding this important issue for all stakeholders,” Rymer stated.

He reaffirmed the BVI’s commitment to maintaining strong ties with the USVI, emphasising the familial, economic, and historical connections between the territories.

“These ties are rooted in mutual respect, shared history, and a spirit of collaboration,” Rymer said. “We are dedicated to addressing this matter through open communication and good governance to ensure that the interests of our people and businesses are protected,” he added.

Reports of the proposed tariff and travel fees surfaced this week after Governor Bryan requested an emergency session with the USVI Legislature to deliberate on the measures.

According to an article by VI Consortium, the proposal aims to address economic imbalances and protect USVI businesses. The BVI government has yet to outline what countermeasures, if any, will be taken should the proposal be enacted.

To hell with his tariff he can’t threaten us with nothing. USVI will suffer more than us if our territories not getting along so somebody better talk to him. What we need to do is expand the airport. It’s better if we got along but if we can’t then oh well so it go sometimes. Our government soft anyway they going to lay down I bet.
