BVI has tools to be self-sufficient, says int’l governance expert

Governance expert Dr Carlyle Corbin

The BVI has all of the tools it needs to become sufficient in self-governance, an international expert in governance, Dr Carlyle Corbin, has argued.

“I think the assessment actually does conclude that that is in fact the case,“ the governance expert said on the Honestly Speaking radio show previously.

Dr Corbin, who was commissioned by the government to conduct an independent self-governance assessment of the BVI, said the only thing currently lacking in the BVI‘s quest in self-determination or self-governance is an actual transfer of power.

The situation that currently obtains in the BVI, according to Dr Corbin, is a delegation of power which he argued is a completely reversible circumstance as opposed to the devolution of power.

Based on his assessment, Dr Corbin said: “All of the things that I am referring to in terms of the evolution of the territory – and the British have assisted in this respect – but also the government itself and successive governments have made a concerted effort to invest in the people.”

According to Dr Corbin, the BVI has a very high standard of education, highly technical skills throughout the society and economy and major sectors of the economy are by and large in the hands of the population.

He further argued that the territory possesses an institution such as the H Lavity Stoutt Community College which he said has linked its curriculum to the maze of the economy.

“You have a financial sector curriculum, you have a curriculum in tourism, you have various other areas specific to training people to enter the workforce in that area,“ Dr Corbin explained.

The government recently released a summary of the findings of Dr Corbin’s assessment on self-governance, arguing that the BVI’s current status cannot be deemed acceptable or permanent.

“The overall conclusion of the assessment is that the current overseas territory status remains preparatory to the [Full Measure of Self-Government] FMSG according to international law,” the government’s statement noted.

It continued: “The current status of the Virgin Islands cannot be regarded as a permanent and acceptable status of democratic governance in perpetuity as long as political inequality and unilateral authority remains its overarching feature – regardless of how modernised the dependency arrangement may be projected to be.”

All he is saying is we have the statutes etc. that would be enough for self governance.

    What he isn’t saying is;
    – these are adhered to.
    – we are properly run.
    – we could self-sustain.
    etc.

Just a load of wind to provoke talk among the gullible.

What about the Economic and Brain Drain on a small country like the Virgin Islands?
Let’s look at taking 10 of our best and brightest, and ssending them off to Ottawa, New York, Washington, London, Berlin, Paris, Brussels, Beijing, Dubai and Tokyo – the economic and political capitals – world capitals – one would think we’d want an embassy in each, staffed with our smartest individuals. Each one will need an office – they are all high-rent areas; each will need a staff – qualified pros; and each will have expenses for dealing with the social diplomatic scenarios in which they are living. And don’t forget the salaries required to live in those places.
Sending off the ten of our best and brightest constitutes “brain drain” for a country this size.
The rest of the expenses are going to be a huge economic drain, hundreds of thousands of dollars for each embassy.
Do we really believe we can afford these costs of independence?

Ok genius. Name the tools that BVI has to be self sufficient. I will name some tools that I believe the territory needs to be self sufficient.
    1. Be able to feed the population
    Don’t produce anything
    Don’t manufacture anything.
So, there is no Agriculture, no fishing industry. We have to wait for a boat to come from Dominica, St. Vincent or wherever.

    2. We have nothing to export because we don’t produce. Everything we import.

    3. Security
    Do we have an Army?
Look I can go on but this is just a synopsis of very imñortant requirements that the BVI don’t have. So Mr. Genius please give your outline for the territory to be ready for self dependency.

the so-called expert is from USVI – so how’s that decolonisation going? With locals herded into housing projects and US mainlanders hogging the real estate. Where was this genius for Irma? Or Covid? Where were our resilient pillars of society when the storm came? Or the home-grown pharmaceutical laboratories to magic up the next vaccine in quick time? Has he had a look at the independent countries (much bigger than ours) under the yoke of Chinese debt, or Russian mercenaries?
Above all, what is to stop our dysfunctional politicians selling us out?

The talk of independence always comes up when the government feels threatened or worried about what the UK might do in response to their bad-mindedness.

COI report got folks got people nervous. They want to go UK to talk about it so that there are no leaks about some begging they will have to do to maintain some sort local of order.
