BVI medical school now accepting applications for 2025
The BVI’s first medical school, Ponce Health Sciences University (PHSU), is now accepting applications for the fall of 2025.
Originally based in Puerto Rico, PHSU also has campuses in the United States. Applicants are required to hold a Bachelor’s degree, as the university offers a Medical Doctor (MD) degree over four years.
Earlier this year, Minister of Health Vincent Wheatley highlighted ongoing negotiations to establish a medical school in the BVI. In July, representatives toured the facilities designated for the school, accompanied by BVI government officials.
While discussions about introducing medical schools in the BVI have been in progress since 2018, PHSU’s promised opening next year marks a significant milestone for the territory. An agreement to establish a medical facility was signed in 2018, receiving Cabinet approval at the time.
Former Premier Andrew Fahie then announced in 2020 that he had signed an agreement to develop medical schools through the Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Medicine and Other Health Professionals. This new initiative is expected to bring numerous benefits to the BVI’s economy.

Finally. Politicians must have worked out how to get their cut and it can go ahead. Wonder how much of the $220,000 SP having to share.
Or with was blocked by a jack donkey with daily operations of systems with no vison and now pressure has made him relent
Wow what terrible planning. These blind eyed politicians only see $$ signs in their short focused eyes. Where the hell are these medical students going to live…? We already have a housing crunch here in the BVI. Rental costs are already way to high for most people and now there will even be less choices and higher costs for accomodation for locals. Before you politicsters make these decisions you need to plan in advance. You need to provide housing for these students that does not affect the local pool of available rentals.
So you supposedly want to be self governing, aint gonna happen any time soon, you do not have the experience, ability or capacity to self govern independapently yet….maybe some day in the future…but not now…
Would make sense for the empty SSB development to be utilised. But we rarely do what makes sense.
the new medical school is located on Tortola it better be on the coast in a good protected bay anchorage. The only way prospective students can live here is sail here on their own boats and anchor near the school. Med students cannot afford the exorbitant apt. rents on Tortola.
Surely govt will use the unsold units of the low cost scheme on the hill? Govt, if you hadnt thought of this, dont thank me. Watch this space!
Now now, would you send c your child to a medical school the BVI?
For starters, the requiremenfor entrance would be extremely low. Our grat dates from HS ,very few barely make it to a colleflge..except Community College where they go after graduation to learn how to fill out an application and make it into a 3rd rate college on the Gov dime.
Medical school without clean water supply, electricity,an inadequate local Hospital.
Read the fine print. It is an undergrad four year PRE-medical school program to help a student pass the test (MCAT) to get into a REAL medical school. No real benefit for BVI unless you are a landlord …btw when you head off island to complete the program, St Louis has the highest murder rate in the US.
“Anonymous”,and”Correction”,the title of the excerpt, says,Medical School!
So it’s clear to all, that it is an accredited, medical school institution, licensed to do business,in the Virgin Islands!
And, I would hope that Virgin Islanders, would take advantage of the
opportunity to earn an American medical degree, right here!
Trust me, this school will see,
applications, from students, all over the
world!
As for where students will reside-well,
Virgin Islanders, have always been a
resourceful people, that rises to occasions,
such as this.
Awesome, awesome news!
How those students would secure medical license in the BVI.
We are creating more local doctors to work in the USA.
The negative Nancys out early doing their work as usual.
The losers them here critizing the medical school same way they hlscc when papa stoutt break the foundation at pari bunch of dummies or a matþer of fact jealous losers.
A Caribbean doctor said they know nothing about medical cannabis. By time we get legal 2050 our doctors will say that too as we fall behind.
Can they really do their best if they dont know about the most studied plant on earth. The first cultivated fiber, & seed oil plants in human history?
Can we eat weed? There is a thing called hemp seed oil. Himalayan mountain people cook with it. Yes we are lacking education in all sectors.
Who is going to teach these students?
This decision is a bad idea. You are adding more residents to live in the BVI. We are currently unable to take care of the residents residing here now:
1) Our housing product is very limited. The families currently living in the BVI cannot find places to live. Where are these people going to live.-
2) The students – will not be knowledgeable enough to assist with our medical system.
3) Our people are dying left right and center – where is the health education for our people. Preventative care. Medical Schools do not teach preventative medicine. We will be getting more of the same – no prevention – no help for our very sick.
4) The BVI residents should have had the opportunity to vote on this matter.
5). BVI wake up . The other islands take on those schools because the politicians do not sit and find original ideas to make their country better for the people
A medical school in the BVI is a bad idea at this time.
No housing, poor infrastructure, poor health care, COI not over,
No food security, no food, and political parties with no vision.
SKN has thousands of such students and near 50 years experience dealing with such. The students are adequately housed and have no problem with locals nor politicians. Seek advise and be willing to learn from others.
