BVI now under tropical storm watch

The Department of Disaster Management (DDM) has advised that a Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for the territory, emphasising the potential for storm conditions within the next 48 hours.

The alert follows the identification of a tropical disturbance in the Caribbean, now moving towards the area.

The disturbance, which was last positioned about 875 miles southeast of Road Town and is referred to as Potential Tropical Cyclone Five, is tracking west-northwest at a speed of 37 km/h with winds of up to 45 km/h.

The latest forecasts suggest that the system is expected to become a tropical storm by late Monday.

The watch encompasses nearby regions, including the US Virgin Islands and St Martin. Initially monitored as AL98, this system has shown potential for significant development and could directly affect the BVI.

Meteorological services in Antigua and Barbuda are actively tracking the system, issuing updates on expected rainfall, which could total four to six inches over the northern Leeward Islands and up to 10 inches in Puerto Rico. The advisory also noted that tropical storm conditions are possible within the watch area beginning Tuesday.

The DDM is urging residents to review hurricane response plans and prepare, stressing the importance of stocking up on essentials and securing properties. The forecasted storm surge could increase sea levels by one to three feet above normal in the US and British Virgin Islands, bringing large and potentially destructive waves near coastal areas.

Swells from the storm are expected to affect the Leeward Islands starting Monday night, creating life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.

Residents are advised to follow official weather advisories, comply with guidance issued by national meteorological services, and stay informed to complete necessary preparations to safeguard against the storm’s potential effects.
