BVI nurses get immunization training to strengthen healthcare

Primary healthcare nurses in the British Virgin Islands recently participated in a training workshop aimed at strengthening immunization services across the territory.

The workshop covered key areas, including vaccine coverage, disease surveillance, outbreak response, and effective vaccine communication. Participants also received training in data interpretation and management to enhance informed decision-making and improve immunization strategies in the BVI.

Chief Medical Officer Dr. Ronald Georges described the training as an investment in the resilience of the healthcare system.

“Our nurses are at the frontline of immunization efforts, and by equipping them with the latest tools and knowledge, we are ensuring that our communities remain protected from vaccine-preventable diseases,” Dr. Georges stated during the opening session.

The initiative was a collaborative effort between the BVI Health Services Authority (BVIHSA) and PAHO/WHO experts, including Dr. Karen Broome, Advisor for Immunization in the Caribbean Sub-region, who supports countries in strengthening national immunization programmes, and Dr. Solange Kobi-Jackson, Advisor for Community Health and Life Course for Barbados and Eastern Caribbean Countries.

Meanwhile, Director of Primary Healthcare at BVIHSA Dr. Natasha Frett expressed gratitude for PAHO/WHO’s support in advancing immunization services in the territory.

“Primary healthcare nurses are instrumental in the success of our immunization program. This workshop not only enhances their technical skills but also reinforces their role as leaders in public health,” Dr. Frett stated.

The training underscores ongoing efforts to improve healthcare delivery in the BVI and ensure stronger immunization coverage for residents.

According to the BVIHSA, the training is part of a broader initiative to strengthen the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI). Phase two will involve site visits and hands-on application of the training, ensuring that best practices are effectively implemented at community clinics throughout the Virgin Islands.
