BVI officers get UK-funded financial crimes investigation training

Officers from various organisations and departments across the territory recently completed a UK-funded training course focused on financial crimes investigations.

According to a press release from the Governor’s Office, members of the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF), Financial Investigation Agency (FIA), Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, and the Attorney General’s Chambers participated in the training, which took place from November 26 to December 6.

Governor Daniel Pruce emphasized the significance of the training, noting that it allowed officers to enhance their skills in financial investigations and strengthen their overall investigative capabilities.

“This essential training has served as an opportunity to collaborate with the UK, and highlights our commitment to supporting the Foreign Secretary’s campaign to crack down on corruption and illicit finance. I am grateful for the NCA’s support in delivering this crucial step in protecting the Virgin Islands from the challenges posed by illicit finance,” Pruce said.

The training consisted of two courses, which focused on financial investigation, asset restraint, and confiscation.

Financial investigation plays a vital role in combating illicit finance while ensuring that the Virgin Islands meets international standards. It is also crucial for law enforcement to understand the financial aspects of crimes committed in the Territory, enabling them to trace both victims and suspects’ financial activities.

As one of the world’s leading financial services centres, the BVI derives more than half of its annual revenue from the financial services industry. However, it has faced increasing international pressure to address concerns related to financial crimes such as money laundering.

Congratulations. Now go out Act and be seen to be Acting within the legal aspects of the law at ALL times. And while so doing, help develop a culture where the corrupt officer fears the incorruptible officer and not the other way around. Be Brave.
