American newspaper USA Today has ranked two local establishments in the BVI as among the top 10 best beach bars in the Caribbean.

And of the hundreds of bars that exists across the region, Soggy Dollar on Jost Van Dyke has taken the number-one spot on that prestigious list.

USA Today highlighted the BVI-based bar for its famous Painkiller rum cocktail. Meanwhile, falling further down the list in the number-four spot is Hendo’s Hideout which is also located on Jost Van Dyke. Hendo’s came in behind Elvis’ Beach Bar and the Sunshine Shack; both of Anguilla.

Commenting on the recognition received, the BVI Tourist Board said the territory is proud to be included in these rankings.

“We are honoured to receive this coveted recognition from USA TODAY and its readers,” said Tourism Director Clive McCoy who also highlighted that The Baths National Park on Virgin Gorda was named one of the best Caribbean attractions while Callwood Rum Distillery was named one of the best Caribbean Rum Distilleries for 2023.

“The Caribbean’s beach bars, attractions, and rum distilleries are among the best in the world. We are proud to be ranked in the top ten regionally in these categories. Congratulations to our award-winning Tourism Industry partners,” McCoy added.

BVI tourism is more and more alcohol based. Trailer park sailors chasing the next drink. Remember the days of sailors who could actually sail, had class, courtesy, respect and actually were a joy to meet? Nickel diming booze hounds what we got today.

We can thank our Tourist Board for not promoting the high end tourism product we used to be known for; Nature’s Little Secrets. It is easier for the TB and Government to achieve high numbers with low-end cruise ships bringing thousands to the beach bars, inundating the Territory with trash, leaving very little in the economy other than the head tax, resulting in chasing away the high-end tourists.

Well if they rated us based on the type of rum we have in our beach bars here in the BVI we are doomed.

Until we BVIanders, but especially tolans, learn some class courtesy and respect we can’t demand it from tourists. The annual pilgrimage of towns here for lobster fest is a stain on Anegada’s reputation and I worry that toruses who witness it don’t appreciate that it is Roland and not those of us that live here.

Society is hood winked, mentally psychologically arrested, religiously and morally caged.
A known scientific fact, alcohol causes society trillions of dollars in medical care per year for alcoholism, related illnesses, vehicular accidents and deaths, but it is legal. That they say makes perfect legal and economic sense.

Not implying the abolition or prohibition of alcohol though. That did not work in the past and will never work as long as mankind exists on earth.
If human kind could not or did not have means to alter his mind’s mood, his numbers on this earth will be very smaller that today’s.

The same is true for all other mind-altering substances. Hence, why do society then, and the controlling power structure still believes so much in practicing hypocrisy?

What is the difference between the effects of a shot of Cruzan, Remy, rum and coke and a joint, a line or solid? They all do they same identical thing, change the human mood. The only major difference is cited in paragraph one.

Yet, the hypocrites will sit in his/her house and down a bottle of Cruzan or Remy or his/her favorite wine in one night, come out on Sunday after church and moralize for the rest of the week on those that smoke a joint, snort or smoke some solid as being immoral, bad and ungodly.

Could say more but will leave it there. The hypocrisy is deeper than the Pacific and Atlantic combined.

What does addiction 101 and hypocrisy have in common?
