BVI recruits election officers as national polls draw near
The Office of the Supervisor of Elections has started recruiting election officers, another sign that preparations are ramping up for the BVI’s next general election.
According to a public recruitment notice, the office is seeking persons to help administer the elections at polling and counting stations. Interested persons have until Monday, September 14, 2026, to submit expressions of interest. No election date has been announced. However, the next general election is constitutionally due in 2027.
The Constitution requires the House of Assembly to be dissolved four years after its first meeting following an election, unless it is dissolved earlier. A general election must then be held within two months of dissolution. The recruitment comes as political activity intensifies across the territory. Not all parties have announced full slates, while multiple new faces have already expressed intentions to contest seats.
The NDP, for example, has begun ratifying candidates, including Aaron Parillon and Perline Scatliffe-Leonard, while commentator Cindy Rosan has announced an independent At-Large bid. The political landscape is also becoming increasingly fragmented amid public frustration over the pace of national development, including longstanding concerns about roads, water, cost of living, infrastructure and governance.
Meanwhile, the “All 13 Must Go” movement has gained attention, while the Virgin Islands Innovative Association and other emerging political groupings have also entered public discussion. Former legislator Mark Vanterpool has also launched the People’s Leadership Movement (PLM) after his fallout with the NDP, a decision which has added political angst over whether other senior NDP figures could eventually break ranks and align themselves with PLM.
Political onlookers have argued that the growing number of parties, movements and independent candidates reflects broader dissatisfaction with the territory’s leadership and a desire among some voters for alternatives to the established political order.
