BVI robotics team to compete in global competition in Greece
A team of five students from the British Virgin Islands has recently departed for Athens, Greece, to compete in a prestigious global robotics competition.
The team, consisting of Michaela Jack, Judiah Case, Kh’mouri Anthony, and Amani Brown from Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS), along with Elyon Jones from H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC), will showcase a robot they meticulously designed, built, and programmed.
The team was formed during the Robo Mindset Summer Camp, organised by the Ministry of Education. In preparation for the competition, the young innovators focused on analysing their robot and ensuring its durability for the challenges ahead.
Team BVI emphasised that teamwork has been their greatest asset throughout this process. By combining their diverse perspectives, they effectively collaborated to generate ideas and build their robot.
Their coaches—Andre Roberts, Caren Cuffy-Jules, Lauren Welch, and Renee Weston, all teachers and Education Officers in the Technology and Science department—shared insights into the challenges faced by both the students and themselves during this journey.
This marks the second time the BVI has entered the ‘For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology’ (FIRST) Global Robotics Competition, having participated for the first time in Singapore in 2023. The FIRST competition, launched in 2017, aims to create an environment that nurtures future leaders, problem solvers, and engineers to tackle evolving global issues.

So the little child Minister (aka mu**in top)gone on another trip again. This time she gone to Greece to babysit the students even though they have teachers with them. Anything to go flying at the expense of tax payers. The last time I checked the House of Assembly was in session. That’s when we elect children to do big people work. That first class ticket to Greece must be costing tax payers at least 20k while we have people who can’t buy food to eat.
@ election have consequences
It is quite inappropriate for you to resort to name calling ,it show that you do not have respect for yourself nor authority. As young as nine years old in biblical time young people were call to lead, why do you think if should be different now?
If your comment comes from a place of hate ,it will only produce anger, then aggression, and once you are comfortable with it ,this then become a norm, and it is then rooted in a lifestyle you choose to bring to the forefront for other to analyze your personality which is not attractive. I would suggest you take some classes in psychology or sociology you will surprise of the findings.
Kudos to the student and their support team , I wish they win.
Wondering whether all the other teams bring their Education Minister along?
Congratulations and best wishes to the students and teachers involved. Represent yourselves and the territory well. We are proud of you!
I’m sorry–where does it say that Minister is accompanying them? And why remove the spotlight from the students to use this opportunity to gripe about the Minister? Things aren’t perfect, but jeez, when the students are involved in something positive, at least acknowledge them.
Congratulations to the team. Best of luck in the competition.
Why don’t people get their facts together before coming here with nonsense.
Where in this article does it say that the Minister was accompanying the team? Nowhere! But people still on her case about traveling. SMH
