BVI still under Flash Flood Watch as Tropical Storm Ernesto departs

The BVI remains under a Flash Flood Watch as Tropical Storm Ernesto moves further away from the territory. The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Services issued the watch yesterday, urging residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas to be prepared.

A Flash Flood Watch means that moderate to major flooding is possible but not imminent in the watch area. Residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas were urged to prepare for flooding to safeguard life and property. They were also encouraged to prepare to move to higher ground if flooding rains develop or a Flash Flood Warning is issued.

The watch is expected to remain in effect until midday today, Wednesday, August 14.

Tropical Storm Ernesto brought heavy rainfall to the BVI over the last 24 hours and is now approximately 87 miles west-northwest of Road Town. According to the Department of Disaster Management’s Tropical Update for the Virgin Islands, Ernesto is expected to strengthen further as it moves away from the territory.

While the storm is moving away, the risk of flooding remains due to the significant rainfall it has already produced. Some areas have received at least three inches of rain. This, combined with the potential for further heavy showers, raises concerns about potential flooding, particularly in low-lying areas.

A Hurricane Watch and Tropical Storm Warning are still in effect for the Virgin Islands. Residents are advised to stay tuned to local radio or television for updates on the weather conditions and any potential flash flood warnings.
