Carrot Bay Cultural Fiesta honours 82-year-old fisherman
Cyril Molyneaux, an 82-year-old fisherman, was honoured at this year’s Carrot Bay Cultural Fiesta, recognizing his decades of contribution to the local fishing community.
The three-day event, held in Carrot Bay, featured an opening ceremony on Thursday, August 8, where Molyneaux was surrounded by BVI royalties as he received an honorary plaque.
Molyneaux, a lifelong resident of Long Bay, began fishing at the age of 11 alongside his father, John. Over the years, he not only mastered the art of fishing but also dabbled in carpentry, building houses across the BVI without any formal training. His career also included a stint with BVI Public Works.
Despite a near-death experience on the water, Molyneaux remains dedicated to fishing. His children insists on him being accompanied on his fishing trips out of concern for his safety, though he occasionally ventures out alone.
The Carrot Bay Cultural Fiesta is part of the 70th Emancipation Festival, celebrated under the theme, “Celebrate Our Freedom and Live in Unity as BVI Festival Turns 70!” The event featured donkey rides for patrons, local foods cooked over open fires, drinks, and music, with attendees enjoying the seaside or gathering in small groups.
Traditional BVI foods were sold as the crowd awaited the ceremony honouring Molyneaux. The festival not only marks 70 years of cultural celebration but also commemorates the 190th anniversary of the abolition of slavery in the BVI.
The event continues into August 9 with a variety of cultural games taking place in Carrot Bay.

The best festival showcasing the true culture of the Virgin Islands (UK). To the organisers, thanks for clean, healthy fun. You always outdo yourselves every year, only wished i could be there. Kudos to all who supports these events at Carrot Bay. This is where the Government should place our hard earn taxes.
