CGB sewerage treatment plant wasting away

Second District Representative, Melvin ‘Mitch’ Turnbull

Second District Representative Melvin ‘Mitch’ Turnbull expressed deep concern over the state of the unused Cane Garden Bay sewerage treatment plant, describing it as a missed opportunity that has cost the people of the BVI dearly.

Speaking during an Opposition forum, Turnbull highlighted that the plant, which was constructed several years ago at an estimated cost between $7 million and $10 million, is not currently serving its intended purpose.

“Cane Garden Bay has a sewerage treatment plant… that is down there whistling,” Turnbull said, noting that while the physical plant is in place, there has been no follow-through in connecting the necessary pipelines—referred to as “laterals”—to channel sewerage into the plant for treatment.

Turnbull stressed that despite multiple contracts awarded over the years, the necessary connections to make the plant functional remain unimplemented. “Since 2020, a contract has been awarded and this government… that is elected, whether under the former leader and the current one, are still yet to implement or put the funding for a sewerage project,” Turnbull lamented.

Cane Garden Bay, one of the BVI’s most popular tourist destinations, has long struggled with sewerage treatment issues, particularly following the impacts of Hurricanes Irma and Maria. The failure to properly connect the plant has resulted in an ongoing public health concern, as untreated waste threatens both the local environment and residents.

Turnbull highlighted that this inaction has led to wasted resources and increased frustration. “We are blaming everything on everybody else and not accepting responsibility,” he said, underscoring the need for proper management of infrastructure projects like the sewerage treatment plant.

Turnbull’s remarks are the latest in a long line of criticisms regarding the government’s handling of essential services and infrastructure in the territory. Complaints have been made for years about the state of sewerage in the East End Long Look community, where residents continue to be frustrated by the slow pace of implementation of their sewerage treatment facility.

  4. Tired of inadequacy says:

Our government would have to stay on the island and do some work to our failing infrastructure for this to get fixed, and we all know how much this government like first class travel.

  5. Contamination says:

of the sea water in Cane Garden Bay will likely have a negative impact on cruise passengers swimming on this beach. Cruise ships will eventually change to other island ports where the sea water is not contaminated with human an other waste.

  6. Honestly... says:

All Marlon and Mitch going to do is complain???? These are the same men that went to the Governor and put full confidence in Hon. Natalio Wheatley to form the Unity Government and all was well because they finally got to be Ministers like they always wanted to. Now all of a sudden Wheatley is not fit to lead after they followed him for 10 months as leader. When are these guys going to bring real solid solutions to the table? Every single day is something to complain about. Everybody can walk around in any country and say what’s wrong or what could be done better. It takes REAL LEADERSHIP to ascertain the ills and come up with VIABLE SOLUTIONS and PLANS to get them resolved. The place is very thick with negativity and nobody is putting forward any solutions to anything.
