COI may never go away
Communications and Works Minister Kye Rymer has conceded that the Commission of Inquiry (COI) and the reforms it introduced may become permanent fixtures in the BVI.
During a recent debate in the House of Assembly, Rymer stated that while the government is committed to implementing the COI reforms, the process has evolved beyond their original expectations.
“Somewhere along the line, everything seemed to change. I would say the goalpost changed a bit, where now it seems that a reform is not completed unless it has been assented to. That is something that is out of our hands as a body,” Rymer explained.
“It’s no more that the government is not implementing the reforms,” he continued. “It’s now that when the governor puts his signature there, that’s when it would be checked.”
Rymer reasoned that the BVI might be stuck with the COI for quite some time and warned residents that “this is not what we signed up to, but this is what seemingly is the new trend now.”
According to the Minister, the reforms are now deeply intertwined with the future of governance in the territory. “It could seem that this COI may never go away,” Rymer admitted. “The next step is making sure that it bears fruit.”
This ongoing reform effort stems from the COI findings, which were launched to investigate governance issues in the BVI. The Commission identified areas requiring significant changes, particularly in governance, and set forth a series of recommendations that the government has committed to implementing.
These recommendations aim to strengthen good governance and improve the functioning of statutory boards and other government entities.
Rymer also acknowledged concerns from some members of the public regarding the COI reforms. “I know persons may be a bit wary about the COI,” he said. However, he emphasized that the government remains committed to seeing these reforms through, even as the process extends longer than initially expected.

I like Kye but .. Why can’t these self serving politicians get it straight in their minds! The COI reinforces a framework of what should have been being done. It should never go away, for if it does, we will be back to free for all/wild west and all the pots will be empty!
for exposing ya’ll selves / but you left out the reason we have the *COI* who begged for it , what was discovered by the COI AND WHO ARE THE PERPETRATORS OF WHAT WAS FOUND BY THE SAME COI
of the sheer ignorance of good governance is this persons challenge.
I hope it never goes away cuz yall seem to do only the bear minimum of work while its here.
when its gone it back to business and doing no work as per usual
The whole point is that the COI should never go away. Changes are supposed to have been made to how things are done here. The expressed wish of all the leaders is to get back to how it was before as soon as possible. None of the 48 recommendations have really been completed. It is in paper only and then with bad intent. The only intention is to make the recommendations of the COI to go away as quickly as possible as so clearly stated by one of these pathetic leaders here.
All you politicians have to do is govern openly and transparently in an effort that solves the larger problems of the Territory. Problem is that they’d have to give up all the cronyism and backroom deals, and would have to recuse themselves from providing goods and services to the govt. They are already paid handsomely, and have eye-opening benefits, including the greed bill, but that does not appear to be enough, so they’ll never do it, regardless of party affiliation.
The CoI may have been politically motivated , a power play and its may have been predetermined . Nevertheless, it unearthed some bad practices, failures, etc, which should have been self-identified with some effective governing practices, ie, self-evaluations, audits, etc. Let’s stop peddling nonsense that the CoI may not go away; it will go away the reasonable and practical changes are implemented and improved upon in time. Will other failures occur, will other corrupt practices occur, will nepotism and cronyism occur, will the big shots and elites continue to enjoy special privileges, will governments continue to overpromise and underdeliver, will government and opposition continue to disagree most of the time, etc??? Yes. But it is up to the people get and stay engaged to prevent and minimize these events by keeping government , politicians in check.
@Stealth, preach,,preach, bro. Indeed, keeping government on the straight and narrow is up to the PEOPLE. The People played a key role in the ship of state going off course by seeing and condoning bad, corrupt practices, etc because it serve their interest. They appease and condone the behavior. And unless the people attitude and behavior change the more things change the more they will stay the same. People must be change agents, forcing government to conduct self-evaluation, performing creative destruction as the more mature bloggers may suggest.
Kye Rymer you are so right when you say the COI may never go away, as long as there are people like you and your government I can’t see it going away.
Do what you can to make peoples life better, easier & the UK can say what ever they want people will support a good government.
You are playing by their rules hopping through their hoop and now you realize they are raising the hoop until eventually you will not reach and fall flat.
You have to be smarter than that, keep your eye on the welfare of the people that is your job.
We need smarter politicians like Lavity, Ralph and CB Romney
