Community urged not to serve liquor to minors

The Family and Juvenile Unit of the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) is urging the public to refrain from serving alcoholic beverages to underage children.

The police said the warning is especially for bar owners, restaurants, supermarkets, hotels and family members who might be organisers of events, even those hosted within the household.

Law enforcers said adults should not allow children to access places where alcohol is being served. The police also said 2023 ended with several juveniles partaking in underage drinking, some resulting in the need for medical attention.

“Child safeguarding is the action that is taken to promote the welfare of children and to protect them from deliberate or unintentional acts that lead to the risk of or actual harm,” a release from the police said.

They are also reminding persons that the law prohibits businesses from selling alcoholic beverages to persons under the age of 16.

“As 2024 progresses, the Royal Virgin Island Police Force calls upon the community to actively engage in promoting a safe and secure environment for our children. Vigilance in enforcing age restrictions on the sale of alcoholic beverages is not just a legal requirement but a moral duty,” the police said.

The law enforcers are also reminding persons that by adhering to these regulations regarding children and alcohol, persons will be contributing to the well-being of the youth and the overall safety of our community.

What are the penalties? We keep hearing about laws but never hear much about the enforcement of those laws. What’s the good of having laws if they are not being enforced. Enforcement is the biggest problem here in the BVI not the laws. Speaking of enforcement, some of us want enforcement to be selective. It depends on who commits the infraction and who they are related to or friendly with. We are not serious about enforcement at all. It’s just shop talk. Let’s get serious. Look around the BVI and see the many areas where enforcement is lacking then we can begin to have serious discussions.

Yes 16. I dont agree with alcohol but dont mess with that as its not broken. We dont need people acting crazy over a drink and giving people records like they do a joint.

In fact the arrest process from the joint is more harmful & dangerous than the actual joint itself where by a fatal overdose is unheard of & practically impossible.

Educate people so they will make informed decisions on what they put in their body as opposed to criminalizing them.

Education around alcohol is lacking as many people are not sure what the limit is they throw up and say that is enough.

People get drunk & kill others, people drink themselves to death regularly, its called an overdose aka alcohol poisoning.

Check the Pier Park with all those minors with a cup in hand, we know those kids are buying the alcohol and sellers will sell it to them

Government is granting too many liquor licences. Bars are popping up in the post peculiar places. Its disgraceful. Our society will be doomed pretty soon.
