Tarik Aaron has been found guilty of possession of a controlled drug with intent to supply.

Senior Magistrate Tamia Richards handed down the decision last Wednesday, May 4.

The investigations into the allegations against Aaron were a result of a joint operation between Her Majesty’s Customs in the BVI and the United States Customs & Border Patrol on February 2, 2016.

Aaron and Le’Shaughn Smith were apprehended following a pursuit of Aaron’s vessel by law enforcement officials at the time.

Several kilos of cocaine were discarded during the chase.

But a bag containing the drugs was retrieved from the water after the men were apprehended. Forensic testing later confirmed the items retrieved were connected to some of the items recovered from the defendant’s vessel.

A total of 27 kilograms of cocaine, which had an estimated street value of $2,700,000 was recovered during the operation.

Following a plea of not guilty, the matter proceeded to trial, which experienced extended delays because of the 2017 hurricanes that destroyed court facilities and the COVID-9 pandemic that hindered the progress of criminal trials.

In the meantime, Aaron’s sentencing hearing has been scheduled for Wednesday, June 8. He was remanded to Her Majesty’s Prison until that time.

He was represented by PST Law Chambers during the trial.

As for the other defendant in the matter, Smith, he was killed earlier this year in a drive-by shooting in the vicinity of The Boys Service Station in Huntums Ghut.

He was the Chief Executive Officer of a trucking and car rental business and a boat tour agency.

Delayed since the 2017 hurricane? That’s almost 5 years! Really, is our court system that bad?

Even if this cat is guilty, waiting that long for trial is ridiculous on every level.

    We have to do better!
