Court told ‘Blacka’ Maynard was DJ, Uber driver who became desperate

Kadeem Maynard

Kadeem Stephan Maynard aka Blacka — the man who pleaded guilty to being involved in a drug and money laundering scheme that led to the arrest of former Premier Andrew Fahie — told the court that he was a law abiding citizen before becoming embroiled in that plot.

Kadeem’s mother, Oleanvine Pickering Maynard, who is the former Managing Director of the BVI Ports Authority (BVIPA), also pleaded guilty for her part in the plot, even as Fahie maintains his innocence and remains on a million dollar bond at his daughters’ residence in Florida.

Prosecutors proposed as much as 14 years in prison for Maynard, but he has asked that this be whittled down to as little as five years in prison or even probation, which would see him avoiding any jail time.

I was an honest businessman

In a court filing last week, Kadeem painted a picture of himself that suggested he had no criminal past prior to the incident.

Maynard, in a letter to the presiding Judge, apologised for his actions and pleaded for a second chance, telling the court he lost everything he had worked hard for over the last 16 years after falling prey to ‘desperation and temptation’.

“I just wanted to be able to save my family home from repossession and to be able to provide for my kids and their future, as well as being a help to others in need. I saw how hard my mom worked to get that home and I just wanted to do all I can to save it,” Maynard wrote.

The court was informed that Maynard has always worked hard, both in the BVI and the US. Maynard organised an event entertainment business and DJ service in Baltimore, and worked in Lyft and Uber during the day.

He also ran a number of local businesses, including the popular Kravins Night Club & Sports Bar, owned Triple K Cleaning Services, managed Triple K Car Rental and Triple K Gourmet Catering, all in Tortola.

He also told the court that he and two of his children suffered from a number of health issues and said he wanted to be part of their life to help with those challenges and to steer them in the right direction.

“It hurts sitting incarcerated knowing that they are not proud of their dad. I have also brought embarrassment to my wife, which I have been with for the past 16 years and my mom who has played a huge part in my life,” Maynard wrote.

I wasn’t the main player

Kadeem admitted to providing information to the confidential informant (CI) that met with former Premier Fahie, but said he did not falsify paperwork at the BVIPA and had no ability to arrange for the preparation of paperwork at the port.

Furthermore, he said he did not speak to anyone at the port to arrange for the transshipment of narcotics and did not negotiate the Cl’s access to the BVI port.

“Maynard neither negotiated nor calculated the amount of money to be paid for the 3,000-kilo loads. Maynard did not travel to Miami to collect any money from the Cl and was not shown any money in Miami,” the court filing read.

The document further noted: “When detained at the US Virgin Islands, Maynard took no action to evade arrest. Maynard had no participation in the funding for the transportation of contraband and had no knowledge of the person or persons to whom the drugs were to be delivered.”

Maynard told the court that after incarceration, he plans to complete his GED — something he is currently prevented from doing. He also plans to obtain a CDL license and establish a trucking company in Florida with his wife’s support and startup grants, which she sourced.

The Maynards are expected to be sentenced on August 21 while Fahie’s trial has been postponed to January, 2024.

Wow!!! And that’s the excuse for dabblin in illegal activities???? I know quite a number of people who went through or are going through hardships in life and believe me, none of them would think to go transport drugs to make money. Some of these criminals are just money hungry and greed has been the downfall for many.

When I got desperate, I took a dead-end job instead of getting involved in drug dealing with a Head of State. I’ve yet to be arrested, surprisingly.

Awww are we supposed to feel badly for him, his brothers, his wife and his mudda – Not! He’s the individual you don’t want as your neighbor or your taxi driver, or the next person in line with you waiting for groceries. Not a nice lad. Each and every one of us have been desperate at a time in our lives, fewer of which turn to crime for a quick buck. Show an example to these punks, I say give him what is due.

That is common knowledge in today’s society.

Now they are being used to make one look ligit and hard working. Really1?!

It is amusing to watch the participator, and yet quite serious how every element of humanity be used to get out from up under the deep adversity of and consequences of . actions involving going contrary to the law, when confronted with it, and lenghty four cornered rooms stints in particular.

    Actions and consequences

I am sure the Judge will have never heard these stories before.

Everyone else stands up and says “ yeah bro i bad to the bone, lock me up now “

    Honest they do.

  33. Webster says:

But don’t worry!! The judge will fact check ALL of what he said. He better not be lying when he talked about saving his mother’s property from re-possession. He better be able to show that those businesses he listed were legitimate, down to paying social security, NHI and taxes for the employees!!! Come to think of it, what’s the status of said businesses? Are they still operating since he’s out of town? If so, who’s running them?

Then he says his wife has already gotten grants so they’ll go into business together when after he has done his time. If that woman had any sense she would use that money to help support the children while he’s away. And, she better start looking about her own life and not wait around for him.

  34. WAIT WHAT??!?!!!?? says:

    Who he fooling?

Entering into drugs to help those in need?

Where all those businesses come from…hard word???? Yea right!

Mother embarrassed of him but was a part of it??

Wanting to do a GED all of a sudden but jail time holding him up?

Many got their GED and graduated college from a jail cell so stop trying to twist the Judge’s arm!
