DMV’s licence machine inoperable amid record demand

Amid a reported surge in motor vehicle and scooter licensing, the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has announced that its driver’s license machine is currently out of service, impacting its ability to issue new licenses.

In a statement on Tuesday, November 5, the DMV informed the public that the machine is temporarily nonfunctional. While no further details were provided, the department assured residents that updates on the resumption of this essential service would follow.

The disruption could pose challenges for motorists who rely on the DMV for license renewals or first-time applicants who need licenses to operate vehicles in the territory. The DMV has not indicated if any provisional licenses will be issued to accommodate those affected.

Earlier this year, the Minister of Communication and Works reported a record-breaking 20,000 vehicle registrations in 2023, highlighting a growing demand for licensing services in the territory.

This increase points not only to rising vehicle ownership but also to a demand for new and renewed licenses for both new and returning drivers.

  3. Renewals says:

are the majority of drivers visiting the DMV. Perhaps it’s time to lengthen the licence renewal period to 5 or 6 years for car drivers under the age of 70 and 3 years for those 70 and older.
