Fahie charges businesses to donate to ESHS $11M Redevelopment

Premier Andrew Fahie

Premier Andrew Fahie has issued a challenge to 70 successful businesspersons and companies to each donate no less than $60,000 to the Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS) Redevelopment Project.

The Premier said the initiative would be called the “Move with A Purpose Challenge”. Speaking at the contract signing for the four new buildings being constructed at the educational facility, Fahie said ESHS — formerly called BVI High School — has benefited everyone in the territory.

“Elmore Stoutt High School is where almost all of us received our education. Where our children have been and are being educated and where our future generation of Virgin Islanders will be educated. In these times of worldwide turbulence, it is not about what your company can do for you but what you can do for your country,” Fahie said.

“We have just a few people living a life of complaining and even when you fix what they ask to fix, they don’t even say thank you. They move on to the next problem. This is a time for us now to come forward for our country. When you donate to the Move with A Purpose Project, you are investing in the development of Virgin Islanders to become lawyers, doctors, nurses, accountants, mechanics, entrepreneurs, innovators, public officers, managers, sales executives, engineers, CEOs, hoteliers, investment fund managers, administrators, tour operators and many more,” the Premier added.

Developing BVI’s talent pool

Fahie, who is also the Minister of Finance, said donating to the school’s development would also develop the talent pool for businesses in the Virgin Islands.

“If you are a successful business or person, now is the time to show that you truly care about this country and our children and our future generations,” he added.

The Finance Minister said the public education that made people successful has been free for so many years and it will continue to be but now is the time and the place to give something back to the education system and territory that laid the foundation for the success the businesses are reaping.

“We have a couple of businesses that have already pledged donations and I know many more will come and in Jesus’ name I speak to the atmosphere and declare that all the money that we are raising among ourselves with the $60,000 will come and will come in the space of two months,” Fahie declared.

“I don’t say that lightly. I say that because we continue to move with a purpose as a people and you can come to the Ministry of Finance and RDA (Recovery and Development Agency) and we will direct you on how you can make your donation to this project and how you can invest in the future of the Virgin Islands,” the Finance Minister said.

Donors to get monthly report

He said donators will have the guarantee that every money donated will be accounted for. Fahie said each donor will also get a monthly report from the RDA on how the money will be spent and a progress report on the project.

“If you don’t believe me, I can tell you we already have one company that makes up the initial amount that we have in our possession now. We already had one that came forward and give a grant of $4 million. So, don’t tell me it can’t happen. And that doesn’t have anything to do with the other four that we are raising so don’t mix them up,” Fahie said.

The ESHS Redevelopment Project is expected to exceed $11 million.

Well Well Well….to give a figure of how much businesses should donate is ridiculous especially not knowing the current financial position of businesses.

      You know what’s $60,000????

All that garbage truck contract money could be used towards the high school. Instead of giving million dollar contracts to garbage truckers, let Solid Waste Dept have garbage trucks and give staff that duty.

The school cost $7 million according to the plans. You inflate it up to $11 million! Still no cafeteria, no gymnasium, no library, no nurses/medical center, no science lab, nothing modern or forward thinking! Not even a sprinkler system in case of fire. But you still looking more money from we? Tell the badge man put up that money. Tell CSC, Yellow, Iron, Todman, the Crucian security, the AC man, Lake, the tall amphibian, and all your test cronies to give back from the millions they all fit in the past 3 years. Don’t ask the rest of we for spit! COI can’t come fast enough!

  7. Hmmm says:

It would be a lot easier to donate if there was a shred of assurance that the monies received would be spent wisely, and be accounted for, instead of being squandered through the ineptitude that characterizes most publicly funded projects.

  8. VI Gyal says:

The same contractors could have contributed. You went and did over the entire plan from what NDP did and you had all manner of thing to say, now here you are going over by 4 million more than what you initially stated and it is not a complete school because no gym no cafe no library etc. And you asking now for donation to offset the extra you went over by.

If you are stupid you would believe everything you does say.

People vote wisely. DO not just think party.

Really??? To steal & waste??? Go sit down. We challenge you to get the economy up and running – that is the job you beg us to sign you up to – not to ask the very same businesses who can hardly or do not pay us to do your work. Think and stop waste tax-payers time and money whining, finding fault about others and excuses for you! This sounds like begging.

I would suggest to government to put out a list of needed items and supplies along with the vendors and allow people to donate this way or set up a non government agency for collection. There are a lot of persons who are very hesitant when it comes to giving government money.

  23. SAY NO says:

Andrew Fahie You have proven to the BVI people again that you have no pride, no shame and proven again that something is wrong in your head. How can you even think about begging businesses for money for the school when everyone in the BVI knows how much unnecessary money you spent on lawyers how much money you give away to people who were not farmers or fisher men? I hope no business respond to you. You have started projects that could have waited and now you want help from the businesses that some you almost crippled and some you did. Why don’t you go to the people you have been giving all the contracts to, How much are you personally going to give? When businesses donate money for a cause it’s not by a challenged. Fahie you are not a leader you are one big disappointment. How could you tell us a few days ago that you are paying the UK lawyer an additional 1.2 million on top of the 5 million you have already paid and ask businesses to help you build the school???????, I hope the COI have good news for the people of the BVI weather they want it or not. I hope it will be an end to you and your government.

What I am finding very surprising is this.

How is it, a totally separate entity from government was created and supposedly filled with professionals for the purpose of ensuring the best oversite of projects, now find themselves muddled up in this debacle???

I would say that starting a project without the proper funding in place is reckless and irresponsible. Yet they all lined up, Sunday best for the photo-op.

Top to bottom, bottom to top……waste of time.

  29. Blind to the fact says:

Now, I am not for VIP or NDP when say this. If we all take a minute and look at current situation of lack of price control of goods.

I would understand why that have gone up (should it have gone to so much; IDK)

But lets all look at the cost of living lately, and cost of living entails almost everything. And if that continues to go up which is the case in the BVI now. The previous cost of building materials must of sky rocket as well. And trust you me it has, and these companies especially C** are going crazy with their products

Example. If one paid like $60 for ext. ply sheet a few months ago and now that price of materials is now over $120 or even more. Then I can understand the price going over the budget seeing they are building in a time when prices control of good is unpredictable.

  30. Down2earth says:

60,000×70=4,200,000? Was there ever the money for this project? If there is, where would that surplus go??? Why this begging now?

Whoever loves wealth is never satisfied!(The Preacher 5:10) God’s word is true!

  31. Me Jong says:

Bring Chinese to build the school. They have excellent work ethics and it will cost have the price. Everything cost more in BVI than any other place and the quality does not match the price. Look at the infrastrure! Despite billion dollar budget. Contractors are buying out Roadtown and wherever else they could find. Meanwhile government is renting every building they can find.

  32. Please help me says:

I really don’t see anything wrong with business places helping to donate to build back our school
