Faulty unit behind widespread blackouts on Wednesday

BVIEC General Manager, Leroy Abraham

A faulty unit at the Pockwood Pond power plant has been identified as the reason behind widespread blackouts today (January 22), General Manager of the BVI Electricity Corporation (BVIEC) Leroy Abraham has said.

Abraham told members of the media on Wednesday that investigations are still ongoing into the cause behind the faulty unit.

Residents in the territory – with the exception of Anegada which operates off a separate grid – were plunged into powerlessness at about 4:10 am on Wednesday.

The power was restored several hours later, only to be disrupted again at about 12:05 pm. Abraham explained that two of the three units ‘tripped off, and it cascaded into a total system shut down.’

“Based on the analysis of the investigation, it appears as though one of those two units is the originator of the problem. So we are conducting a much thorough analysis now to see what is the cause of the issue,” he said.

In the meantime, the BVIEC’s General Manager said the entire grid has already been restored

“That [faulty] grid will be off until we know conclusively what is the cause or the issue,” he added.

He said it was too early to tell what were the cost factors associated with the outage. Abraham further said there is always that possibility of another interruption, but at the moment, there is sufficient generating capacity to meet the territory’s power demand.

I’m curious, what is a “unit?” Is it a machine, a group of machines, a person or a group of people?

  8. Ungrateful-Short memory says:

Remember how dem had electricity after Irma . They are hard working people who could only work. With the budget they are given . If people pay their light bills consistently it would help with expenses . One thing though the units cost is a bit high .
