Florida City honours BVI with holiday
The City of Tamarac in the US state of Florida will officially declare June 1 as Virgin Islands Day to honour the contributions Virgin Islands natives have made to develop the city.
The announcement was made by Communications & Works Minister Kye Rymer who revealed that the person who spearheaded the proclamation, Morey Wright Jr, is an elected representative of the city Tamarac and has roots in the Virgin Islands.
“They intend to give us keys to the city,” Rymer shared with the House of Assembly on May 6. He said the June 1 holiday will match American Airlines’ historic direct flight to the BVI, which is also set to happen on June 1.
“This is to welcome the commencement of this direct flight [from the US to the BVI] and I intend to be in Miami to cut the ribbon and accept that proclamation. This will help to advertise and signal the significance of this step for the territory from a business, trade and tourism standpoint,” Rymer added.
He also read a portion of the draft proclamation that the city of Tamarac received for the proposed holiday. The proclamation lauded Virgin Islanders as “people who share deep bonds, friendship and familial ties with many citizens and residents of the United States, Florida and the city of Tamarac.”
It also said the city of Tamarac is home to Virgin Islanders who serve the community, the police force, own small businesses and is home to the family of an NFL star. The proclamation also hailed thousands of Virgin Islanders who have settled and contributed to the development of the United States and the state Florida.

Presumably we will be sending a delegation from the BVI, headed by the deputy Premier, traveling first class and staying in Miami (because Tamarac does not have any 5 star hotels).
Can a u.s city name a holiday for these Virgin Islands?
Pure foolishness. Fix the roads and give us water Kye. Stop this parading over nothing.
It is not a holiday as such, it but only an observance, which is equally important. This is done for many ethnic groups through the US.
How about a VI holiday too for the contributions of ex-pats to the Virgin Islands?
#neverhappening!!
THEY ARE ACTING LIKE THIS IS THE FIRST TIME FLIGHT COMING HERE DIRECT…C.B ROMNEY HAD DIRECT FLIGHTS COMING HERE BACK IN THE 80’S….AND THIS ISNT THE FIRST TIME AMERICAN COMING HERE
IS IT YOUR MONEY? JUST HUSH WITH THE STUPID TALK. ARE THEY NOT DIGNITARIES REPRESENTING VIRGIN ISLANDERS( WHICH FROM WORDS YOU PROBABLY NOT ONE OR DOESN’T PAY TAXES) BOMBO CLAT
Picnic at Hotel Balsum after days visiting the various sites in the BVI where the blood of a VIslander was spilled by an updeislun murderer.
Can? It did, according to the article.
Tortola Wharf and Tortola Hill in St Thomas USVI.In addition to the archives locally and in the US Capital chock full of BVI’s positive contributions then and now to the US and USVI.
LMAO
This is potential tourism advertising for our jurisdiction. Tamarac is a city in Broward County, Florida, United States. At the 2020 census, the city had a population of 71,897. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area, which was home to an estimated 6,012,331 people in 2015. Look on the brighter side.
you sure they arent referring to the USVI in error?
Which VI is being honored by Tamarac – the BVI or the USVI? I just see this as an excuse for officials to get a free trip to do their US banking. Remember Head Coach’s last visit?
Agreed.
That would be most appropriate for “54321” request.
Make it happen!
There is only one VI.
Shouldn’t it be the USVI and not the British virgin Islands. Sounds like more Political BS to me
Tamarack? Never heard of it. We really
clutching at straws here.
Ah, so nice to see them honoring the BVI for its glorious contributions to the state of Florida……such as former Premier Andrew Fahie and his family.
