Former Deputy Governor Elton Georges has died.

Relatives said he died Wednesday night, April 4.

The retired public servant was recently in hospital battling an unspecified illness.

“We thank everyone for the love, kindness, prayers and support during his short illness,” family members said in a media release Thursday morning.

Besides being a Deputy Governor, Georges served in several other capacities such as an educator, Complaints Commissioner for the British Virgin Islands (the territory’s first ombudsman), and as a Permanent Secretary.

“Mr Georges embodied public service,” said Deputy Governor David Archer, Jr today, April 5.

“We extend our deepest sympathy, love, comfort and prayers to his immediate and extended family,” he added.

Following news of the death, Opposition Leader Andrew Fahie also paid tribute to Georges in a media release.

He described Georges as a contributor to the BVI’s ‘solid foundation’.

“We witnessed his tenure as a public servant and as Deputy Governor to be one where he served with distinction and integrity. The BVI also was made stronger from his many positive contributions socially,” Fahie said.

“No one could have questioned his deep faith and commitment to God. He served his Lord and Saviour faithfully. We will miss him dearly but may his legacy live on forever in our hearts,” added Fahie while offering condolences to the family.

May his soul have a safe and peaceful journey.

Politically, even had he lived to be a hundred years, he would not have never reached to the pinnacle of political power, which is governorship, of our homelands.

Just another example of the wrong, unfair, undemocratic and un-righteous reality of colonialism, where an able fully capable individual will never ascend to the highest seat of power in his own land/country.

Who, in the twenty first century, with forward thinking still thinks that is OK and that a people should continue to live under appointed governance, political and psycho social conditions indefinitely?

  14. A GIANT HAS PASSED says:

Having worked with Mr. Georges, I can say that he was among the distinguished sons of the soil. He was a walking historian. A major portion of our history has gone with him in death. He was a great leader. He was a great mentor. He gave service above self. May God comfort his family at this time.

  15. TPTB says:

They got to him and finish him off. He knew too much

  16. Rotarian TE says:

The Rotary Family of the BVI & wider Caribbean, especially the Rotary Club of Tortola has lost one of his finest. His entire life evolved around the Intern’l Rotary Motto: “Service above self”. He was a mentor, a teacher, a very fair critic and a walking Encyclopedia – the void he left in the BVI can never be filled. Brother Elton, you have left this World, but will always live in our hearts. Rest in eternal peace until we meet again

Elton was a real gentleman, a professional, filled with honesty, integrity and a sense of humour. The BVI has really lost one of its greatest assets. His passing fills me with sadness, and I am glad of the chance to have worked with him over many years and enjoyed the benefit of his sage counsel. My condolences to his family.

Rita, stay strong. You have the comfort of knowing he adored you. Kamau and Noni, we know you will be there to support your mother during this very difficult time. He was so proud of you both.

He will be sorely missed by our entire family and the greater community.
