Fraser says he crossed over to finalise things in 3rd District

Fraser.

Deputy Premier and Third District Representative Julian Fraser has indicated that his recent decision to cross the political floor and join the government was a proactive step to finally address longstanding issues within his constituency, such as water supply.

Fraser denied responsibility for the district’s water problems over the past decade, asserting that he was removed from office before he could complete the necessary work.

“I was comfortable in the Opposition, you know? But I noticed there were some things that needed to be done. So I came over here to see if we could finalise them,” Fraser said during a recent House of Assembly sitting.

He highlighted that during his tenure overseeing water services, areas like Sea Cows Bay, Pleasant Valley, Pockwood Pond, Duffs Bottom, and Slaney enjoyed a steady 24/7 water supply. However, since his departure from office in 2011, the decommissioning of the Sea Cows Bay water plant has led to significant disruptions.

“After I left office and they removed the plant, they shut the field. They decommissioned the plant in Sea Cows Bay. The people have not been getting water,” Fraser explained.

Fraser also addressed criticisms over the lack of distribution infrastructure during his previous term, emphasizing that government continuity is essential for project completion. “If you had left me in there, I would have had the distribution lines in,” he noted.

In response to claims that his efforts were incomplete, Fraser added: “They complained, ‘Oh, how I put a production plant, but I didn’t put in distribution.’ It’s the same thing I’m hearing my colleagues say today.”

Fraser’s appointment as the new Labour Minister followed the surprising dismissal of former Deputy Premier Lorna Smith. Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley explained that Smith was removed due to doubts over her continued support for his administration as a no-confidence vote loomed in the House of Assembly.

Had he stayed where he was, would there not be a majority on the side of the opposition for him to take control over his district when the opposition would become the governmemt? He and Lorna need to be dishonorably discharged.

  4. Well, Well, Well. says:

So if Hon. Fraser crossed the aisles to get things done in his District, why can’t the Members that are already sitting in Government can’t get things done in their Districts like the members for the 4th, the 7th and the 9th??? Something aint smell right!! Something Stinks!!!

  6. Too much says:

There is so much to unpack here. You essentially are taking a position that is meant to serve the entire Territory to facilitate 3rd district objectives. The fact that this can be said out loud without reservation says so much about what is wrong with our politics. The first concern is why you would need to be Deputy Premier or event on the government side at all in order to get district objectives achieved. This is surely not how this is supposed to work. The detail in the piece suggests spite and deliberate sabotage by the Government of plans to achieve 3rd district goals. Who is paying attention to these kinds of things in the interest of the people as a whole? What is happening in other opposition districts? And then there is the fact that you say this out loud without any acknowledgment of how this broken system needs to be fixed coupled with a seemingly myopic 3rd district focus. What can the rest of us expect from you Hon Fraser? Are you going to let the Premier do whatever he pleases without objection so long as 3rd district objectives are met? What are we to expect, sir?

    • What really happened... says:

Now let’s be honest here: this explanation of Frasier’s, this surface-level story, doesn’t hold up under any serious scrutiny. What really happened was the opposition leadership team had already decided that Hon Smith would be Premier and the other members would get Ministries Frasier was being left out. So he made the correct calculation and decided it was better to cross.

And yes, he absolutely deserves the criticism he’s getting, because as Deputy, you have to bring more than just a District focus to the table. You have to bring vision, discipline, and the kind of big-picture thinking that puts the people first, not just political maneuvering. If he’s going to make this position meaningful, he’ll have to step up, shake off any rust, and remember what real leadership looks like.

  9. Is anyone buying his reasoning? says:

IMO, the Rep from the 3rd is an opportunist. He has been salivating for years to become Premier despite his advancing age.

His move can be viewed perhaps no different than that made by the former Deputy Premier whom he replaced.

With this move, surely he feels he is closer to his goal. IMO, his decision to cross the isle was all about self. I don’t buy what he is trying to sell.

Now, the water woes in his district or any other district should not be. The people of the 3rd like every other district should have all essential services provided to them by the government.

That should be a basic government function and not dependent on who currently runs the government.

However, if any politicians is worth their salt, they should have the political skill to work with the government to still get things done for their district.

Unfortunately, from my observation over the years, such politicians just complain and do nothing else but blame the other side.

If I was a District Rep in the Opposition, and I knew my district had problems with water supply, I will do whatever I have to do to get the government to make things happen.

If I had to compromise as needed, and build consensus among my colleagues, I will do that to achieve my goal for the benefit of the people I represent. In short words, I would demonstrate political maturity.

If you cannot fight for your people from whatever position you find yourself, imo, you are not a good leader.

Collecting a salary every pay period, and coming home to your district empty handed year after year is grounds for a divorce.

Now that he has imo opportunistically crossed the isles, we shall see if the water woes in the 3rd gets resolved. Watching.

All we do around here is talk and complain alot, nothing else. When will the people rally and petition for ALL MINISTRIES TO BE HELD BY AT-LARGE CANDIDATES ONLY? Until then, SHUT THE F**K UP! It’s time for constitutional change where a rule is put in place for Premier, Deputy Premier and Ministers must contest elections as At-Large candidates where ALL voters get to cast their ballots, not a few cronies in districts. So, until such time you are just pi**ing in the wind.
