Gov’t apologises to Chalwells, reaches agreement on land dispute

The Ministry of Communication and Works has confirmed that the Government has apologised to the Chalwell family after reaching an amicable agreement regarding a previous land dispute.

“The Government acknowledges and apologizes for any deficiencies in its departments’ approach that may have contributed to the concerns raised by the Chalwell family,” the Ministry stated.

The agreement, announced on Tuesday, February 25, will allow the continuation of roadworks in the Hodge’s Creek area. The project includes rehabilitating sidewalks and installing new drainage systems to enhance the community’s infrastructure.

Expressing gratitude to the Chalwell family for their cooperation, the Ministry reiterated its commitment to open and transparent communication. “The Ministry of Communication and Works recognizes the family’s cooperation and remains committed to ensuring that all future developments are handled transparently,” the statement added.

Before the agreement, brothers Mickey and Clyde Chalwell had defended their decision to fence off their property, arguing that ongoing roadworks were encroaching on their family’s land. Speaking to BVI News on Monday, February 24, they stressed that while they supported infrastructure improvements, the Government should have consulted property owners beforehand.

While the Government has assured continued collaboration with the family and other stakeholders, details of the agreement were not disclosed.
