Gov’t confusing good governance with potholes — Walwyn

Sixth District Representative Myron Walwyn has accused the government of misinterpreting the public’s demand for good governance by equating it with other issues, such as pothole repairs and other quality-of-life improvements.

Walwyn’s comments were made at a recent press conference following the Opposition’s attempt at a no-confidence motion, which was successfully removed from the House of Assembly agenda by Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley.

During the press conference, Walwyn expressed frustration with the government’s approach to governance, suggesting that the administration was avoiding addressing critical issues. He argued that the calls for good governance go far beyond infrastructure issues.

“They’re confusing and conflating good governance issues, which the COI report addresses, with quality of life issues. They’re totally different issues,” Walwyn said.

He continued: “Your legislative responsibilities that you accepted… has nothing to do with people having issues with potholes, has nothing to do with people having water to bathe, has nothing to do with agricultural issues, has nothing to do with the plethora of things that we have put here (in the no-confidence motion).”

Walwyn further accused the government of failing miserably on good governance issues and quality-of-life improvements for the people.

“That is why we are saying it is time now. You can’t do the job, give up the seat and let’s go back to the polls and let the people decide which government they want to represent their interests. It’s as simple as that,” he added.

Walwyn criticised the Premier for unlawfully shifting responsibility for festival matters from the Festival Affairs Committee to the Tourist Board, bypassing the established legal process. He argued that despite repeated calls to bring the necessary legislation to the House of Assembly, the Premier has shown a disregard for proper procedure.

The lawmaker’s comments come amid growing public dissatisfaction with the government’s handling of the BVI’s infrastructure and financial woes. He suggested that the government’s current focus seems skewed toward superficial fixes rather than implementing good governance measures.

You’re lucky Walwyn had the wall built or there probably wouldn’t have been a high school. You see how strong and sturdy that wall is. It withstood hurricanes and floods while other walls around were busy falling down. So yes, finish it and protect the high school properly.
