Gov’t hosts workshop to advance gender equality within its offices

The Office of Gender Affairs recently organised two one-day workshops aimed at advancing gender awareness and mainstreaming efforts across the Virgin Islands.

Gender mainstreaming is an approach to policy-making that takes into account both women’s and men’s interests and concerns.

The workshops were specifically designed for gender focal points (key staff that promote gender mainstreaming) within government organisations and statutory bodies, equipping participants with essential tools for conducting gender analysis and promoting gender inclusivity in their respective areas.

Facilitated by Gender Affairs Coordinator Patricia Hackett, the sessions featured practical group exercises on gender analysis, where participants learned to differentiate between gender and sex and apply this understanding to real-world data analysis. These exercises helped participants grasp the importance of considering gender perspectives when developing policies and programmes, both in the workplace and in the broader community.

Hackett emphasised the critical role that gender mainstreaming plays in addressing societal inequities.

“In the areas of health, men and women face different risk factors and barriers,” she noted. “It is therefore imperative to take a gendered approach to ensure that there is equality and equity in policies and programmes that cater to the diverse needs and promote more equitable access to services.”

Throughout the workshops, gender focal points were encouraged to think of themselves as advocates within their organisations. They were tasked with sharing their newly acquired knowledge with colleagues and developing policies that are inclusive and sustainable. This approach ensures that all groups within the Virgin Islands can benefit from development and resilience-building efforts, particularly in sectors where gender disparities exist.

Hackett further highlighted the importance of gender analysis in promoting growth and development.

“It was important that our gender focal points in the different government organisations and statutory bodies were trained in gender analysis and mainstreaming because integrating gender perspectives in our workplaces and the wider community is vital for growth and development,” she shared.

The government said it remains committed to eliminating gender-based discrimination and promoting gender equality across all sectors.

  5. True equality says:

If you want true equality in the workforce, then the issues of racial, religious, sexual orientation as well as gender equality need to be addressed. The BVI is not even close to international standards in these areas and for some commentators to say that they shouldn’t apply in the BVI, just proves what a backward people this society often is. Christ would be appalled.

  6. Really says:

    The Workshops should be :

    1. How one should keep his/her personal prejudices when serving the public ?

    2. Respecting and treating everyone in the workplace with respect regardless of their nationality.

    3. How to treat customers with respect regardless of their economic status in society?

    4. How to separate your personal challenges at home without being
    Rude to colleagues or customers?

These are the workshops that would help improve the system.

Stop being copycats . Deal with the issues in your environment and not issues which affect other countries.

    We are losing our way
