Gov’t now accepting payments through remote processing

With the COVID-19 pandemic affecting regular operational hours in the British Virgin Islands, government is now accepting payments for services via remote processing.

The Office of the Premier said in a media release on Tuesday that the remote payment options will allow for the receipt of payments while protecting both the customers and public officers from COVID-19.

Acting Accountant General Laurel Smith outlined the options available and the requirement needed to ensure successful processing of all payments.

She said: “Customers can email their credit or debit card information along with an authorisation form and a valid form of identification to the department for processing of payment.”

“If the credit/debit card holder is not the individual completing the authorisation form, a letter authorising the use of the card must be submitted from the card holder,” Smith added.

Additionally, customers will also have the option of paying fees through wire transfer by crediting government’s operating account at CIBC First Caribbean International Bank. Once completed the funds will be received by the intended relevant department.

The Office of the Premier also said government is presently working on e-Government legislation which will guide the policy and framework for accepting payments online.

  3. Increased risk of fraud says:

This is a horrible way of processing online payments.

With the technology that is available in 2020 nobody should be forced to e-mail their ID documentation together with their Credit Card.

This has FRAUD written all over it. Come on BVI government, you seriously can’t ask people to expose themselves to this fraud risk. Covid needs to be stopped but not on the expense of us having our bank accounts robbed (potentially by hackers but even so by government employees).

  4. Unsafe says:

It is not a good idea to email a form containing credit card details and proof of identity around. If your email is hacked, or the information is left lying around, your card can be charged fraudulently, and you will have no come back on the credit card company. The card companies tell you not to do this. Government needs to create a secure payment website in order to do this. They certainly should not be encouraging this method.

Sorry Mr. Premier but you government is not trustworthy with person’s credit/debit card numbers. Many times in the last 20 years I have had to replace my credit/debit cards because one of your civil servants damaged my card or stole the numbers from the card. I will continue to pay my BVI gov. bills with good old fashioned paper checks from out local BVI banks. Thank you.

  7. Bad idea. says:

Sharing credit card and id simultaneously will lead to fraud.

    Wire transfers are expensive.

How about online transfer directly from bank account to Govt account?

How about online transfer from customer account to Govt bank account?

  10. @ Bank transfer says:

That incurs an additional fee if you’re with a different bank.

The BVI is steadily increasing fees by a large percentage with a Certificate of Tax Exemption for example increasing from $25 to $200.

We could easily be chasing clients away.

How about an informed health update on the corona virus and stop the fear mongering.

  12. Pedro says:

A whole revenue collecting government that has one account with one bank!! Open accounts with all banks so persons can just do interbank transfers at no charge. The popular bank needs to revamp their internet banking to allow interbank transfers between persons holding accounts in their banco. No time for stone age thinking in this new regular else it becomes the new irregular.

  13. PPI Training says:

No one should be handling that information without proper PPI Training. Too much identity theft nowadays for this type of procedure. If you aren’t able to provide an online SSL, your asking for issues.

  15. Sand says:

Not a good idea, government I will pay but online payment must be in place, get advise from BVI electricity and flow how to go about with this. I have been paying my bills online for years. Government get your act together your staff isn’t trustworthy to have our account informations. We are in this together.

  16. Very Distressing says:

That we have a Govt which would suggest we expose ourselves to fraud like this. Again, these are our leaders and it’s absolutely f SHOCKING.

    • Faith says:

There must be systems in place to ensure that your card is safe. Perhaps only one person will receive your information and others know who. It’s safer than scanning which gets hacked everyday. Safer than amazon and those other online stores too. Do not fear.

  17. People says:

When I read these post it is clear that BVI will not get back to prosperity if they study some of you narrow minded people.
