Health concerns force closure Alexandrina Maduro Primary

The Ministry of Education has ordered the immediate closure of the Alexandrina Maduro Primary School until further notice.

The closure is related to number of recent student absences caused by illness.

“Out of great concern, the Ministry immediately contacted the Ministry of Health to assess the situation. On Wednesday 5th October, the Ministry received a report from the Ministry of Health identifying several key areas of concern. The report recommends the immediate closure of the school to remedy the identified issues,” Ministry said in a press statement moments ago.

The ministry did not specify the nature of the concerns identified.

In the meantime, students at that educational facility will transition to online learning, effective today, Thursday, October 6.

“The Ministry of Education is working feverishly to address the matters highlighted in the report and will do everything possible to ensure that this period of online learning is not prolonged,” it said.

“Parents are asked to note the need for the immediate changeover and are asked to make the necessary arrangements for their child/children at home. We recognise that this change will create some inconvenience. However, we must ensure that the health and safety of our students and teachers are paramount,” the ministry added. “The Ministry of Education regrets any inconvenience caused and will continue to work in the best interest of the health and safety of our students and teachers.”

  1. Parent of the Maduro School says:

The saddest thing is that they opened the school without cleaning it. At orientation, you could smell the mold in the building. Here in the BVI, the public school system is severely failing our young people.

  2. It’s a shame says:

Not even maintenance for the schools this government could get right. I cannot recall us having all these problems before. There seems to be no maintenance plan in place at all. How do you neglect the school to the point that most of the children are sick? And don’t blame no body else. Maintenance is an ongoing thing. Slowande and Sharie are disgraceful.

We are taking advantage and depriving these kids of their school lessons

  7. Jokers says:

@Another, I am betting months or maybe years. You and I know there is a bunch of misfits in this place that don’t know where their a** or elbow is located. I feel sorry for the children in this BVI PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM. I will never forget the deplorable condition the school on JVD was in. Our PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM IN THE BVI IS THE LOWEST in the Caribbean. Can’t blame the parents that is sending their children to the US where they can get a decent education from pre-K to 12 grade.

  9. My view says:

Why are we assuming that the school’s infrastructure is causing the illness? There is an illness going around in the community amongst children, in general. Do some research of your child’s school. Clean the school, yes, but sometimes you have to look beyond what you see to solve the real issue.

  10. @The last straw says:

Totally agreed. Just because it is a Public school the children deserved to be treated better. Those are the ones that is going to be the ones to wipe your a**es when you get old laid up. Treat the children with dignity BIG,BIG SHAME.

  11. @My View says:

    It’s mould.
    They know its mould.
They were told before school opened about the mould. They did nothing and opened anyway.
    They should be ashamed.

If we are going to march and protest about something it should be the state of our schools. Slow Andy and that little girl don’t give one hoot about what happens to our children. I for one am disgusted with the state of the MoE and the GNU and all these other do nothing fat salary-collecting persons around here.

  12. Shorty says:

@my view, 70 plus children calling in sick on the same day at this school is definitely a school problem despite the illness going around. This is certainly not normal and if we don’t take it serious the health of our children can be seriously affected long term

  13. House of Assembly says:

What a great place for the next sitting of the House of Assembly! wonder how quickly it would be cleaned then? What about the CTL building?

  14. Curious says:

Isn’t it possible that the children are spreading whatever it is amongst themselves? Are the teachers/faculty falling ill also? Just asking. Doctor’s offices should have data from a sudden increase in visits of common complaints. I hope everyone gets well soon.
