Health Minister asks BVIHSA Chairman to resign

Potter

Reports reaching BVI News indicate that Health Minister Vincent Wheatley has requested the resignation of Ron Potter, Chairman of the BVI Health Services Authority (BVIHSA).

The reason for the minister’s request remains unclear, but it comes in the wake of a tragic incident involving the death of Virgin Gorda resident Revovion Sprauve, known as “Bucky.” Sprauve passed away on August 31 after reportedly being denied timely access to medical services at the Nurse Iris O’Neal Clinic due to reduced hours.

This incident has sparked significant public backlash, with Virgin Gorda residents expressing deep frustration over the government’s handling of healthcare services on the island. There have been calls for greater accountability and improved emergency response.

Public dissatisfaction has since intensified following criticism that Potter was seen smiling during serious discussions about delays in urgent medical care on the sister island. Potter has since refuted those accusations, claiming that’s his “natural disposition”.

It is not clear if Potter has resigned yet or if he will.

  1. WTF says:

Is one of the outcomes of the COI not that ministerial interference should not take place on statutory boards? The minister shouldn’t be removing members, especially without stating cause.

If the man shouldn’t be there, then the board could have a vote of no confidence.

Sounds like we have learned nothing.

    • You are the problem..... says:

The real problem with the healthcare system’s dysfunction is the inability to think objectively. The Minister isn’t responsible for the day-to-day operations of hospitals or the healthcare system. Do you honestly believe these issues only emerged in the last 2.5 years? The problems run far deeper and demand a comprehensive overhaul—no small undertaking. We have to start using our heads, not just reacting emotionally, if we ever hope to fix this. This is a step in the right direction.

The problems should not be getting worse. The minister needs to resign and the health care personnel and the security guards assigned to the Nurse Iris O’Neal Clinic.

No different than the government digging up roads and don’t fix them for months or DDM or admin building can’t complete. Seven years on.

Ron, that is the Minister of Health constituents fussing about his health services. Somebody got to take the fall. Somebody got to be the scapegoat. It just happen to be you at this time.

  7. Marty says:

This is wrong from all angles. To mess with a man’s previously untarnished reputation and use him as a scapegoat for gross inefficiency within the GOVERNMENT and the Authority is quite troublesome, to say the least.

I truly hope that those unkind and uncalled-for words uttered in a public forum by that individual who knows nothing about the man’s horse nor his saddle nor his contributions to our Territory had nothing to do with the decision.

So – that is the thanks the gentleman received for unblemished service to our Territory? To have been selected as the slaughtered sacrificial lamb? Casting aspersions on his sterling reputation? As a people we have gone to the dogs a long time ago; this new development takes us to an all-time low.

A fish rots from the head down – in this case was he the right ‘head’ to have been thrown under the bus? Definitely not!

Virgin Islanders, it is high time that we stop accepting crap and speak out against wrongdoings period!

P.S. I hope this causes others who are thinking of selflessly offering themselves for service to country to think again.

ok now get Vincent to resign and all the government workers who refuse to retire and rather be disgruntle and lash their power out on everybody

also the workers that held up the coi reforms kick them too thanks

  10. Lilly says:

Mr Potter needs to be focusing all of his attention on his accounting firm.

I find that he was talking a lot of bull at the meeting in VG that has nothing to do with the immediate problem being faced. He spoke about nursing and medical schools. What on earth those have to do with the problem being faced currently.
