Health Minister dodges WhatsApp resignation questions

Wheatley

Health Minister Vincent Wheatley has declined to answer questions concerning reports that he asked the BVI Health Services Authority (BVIHSA) Chairman, Ron Potter, to resign.

Potter issued a press release over the weekend explaining that the Minister asked him to resign via WhatsApp message.

During a recent press conference, a reporter inquired about the reasons behind Wheatley’s request for Potter’s resignation and an explanation for the absence of Board meetings at the BVIHSA.

The Minister responded that he did not come prepared to answer questions about the resignation request and promised to address the issue at a later press conference that he plans to arrange.

Wheatley explained the lack of meetings for the BVIHSA Board since July, noting that the Board continues to experience challenges in receiving applications for membership, which are now a prerequisite for persons.

The situation has raised concerns among members of the public and political commentators.

Meanwhile, Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley noted that discussions regarding the authority of statutory boards, like the BVIHSA, will likely arise during upcoming sittings in the House of Assembly.

“Statutory boards are appointed by ministers. Based on the legislation, you can have other entities who have nominees. And, of course, any member of a board who is appointed, their appointments can be revoked,” he explained.

The Premier emphasised the importance of understanding the protocols for appointing and removing Board members. “We have great appreciation for all members who agree to serve on boards. But depending on the legislation, members can be removed under certain circumstances,” He added.

He indicated that the Cabinet may soon consider issues related to the Health Services Authority Board and declined to speak further on the issue.

Evasive is what VW does, alas. Sowande is also pretty good. Nothing will happen because of some arcane procedural detail deemed more important than fixing BVI’s health services mess.
