HMP recruits 9 new prison officers, most from wider C’bean
Nine new prison officers have been recruited at Her Majesty’s Prison in Balsam Ghut.
Eight were recruited from other Caribbean countries while one is from the British Virgin Islands.
The exact nationalities of these individual new recruits are not immediately clear.
Superintendent of Prison Verne Garde, however, told BVI news the new officers officially began working in late October after completing two weeks of training.
“It’s not really additional staff. Basically, we had certain vacancies that existed because some staff over a period had exited the facility by various means so we’re just filling vacancies. We just met our established number,” the prison boss told BVI News.
Her Majesty’s Prison currently employs a total of 92 staff comprising 79 prison officers.
A number of prison officers had reportedly left after the onslaught of Hurricane Irma.

It’s ok, we already know that are from St. Lucia, it was supposed to be 14 total.
y the news ain leh we know da is a heap a lucian them bring
we not yet have the talent, expertise and qualified personnel here?
when will the economic disenfranchisement of the territory cease to be?
Economic disenfranchisement? Lets be real. How many of us locals apply for these types of jobs? Jobs like these go to foreigners because we don’t want them.
I would take if offered, but i am employed in my chosen field.
How many locals do apply you ask? Furtherance to the question: how many locals ever see an advertisement for prison gaurds? Where are such positions advertised?
Meanwhile, it is fundamentally an intellectual misplacement to place all locals into one keg and then suggest that “we” do not want those kinds of jobs. Not sure that is an accurate accountability for all. Perhaps a percentage may have such sentiments, but the unemployed local may think differently.
Why, there are many local, men and woemn, who would take such a position if offered with training, i am sure of that.
Meanwhile, such positions should be highly publicized in the territory and in neighborhoods and they are not.
Finally, every job we keep for us keeps the salaries and taxes in the territory, thus the notion of continued economic “disenfranchisement.”
“Why, there are many local, men and woemn, who would take such a position if offered with training, i am sure of that.”
I am equally sure that a large number wouldn’t. I have unemployed friends who look at certain jobs as beneath them, prison and police officer falls into that bracket.
I agree the more jobs locals get the better for the economy. But i believe we do a disservice in believing that people would jump at these opportunities.
Mor islun man aghen?
How much more island people ayo intend to bring in here buddy???
DID HE WALKED WITH HIS ENTOURAGE FROM ST.LUCIA ?.
Welcome to the continent of the BVI . Do enjoy your stay guys…Turn the hotel into a prison.
Locals and belongers migrate to the USA to find work while a certain politician brings in people from the islands to fill job slots: and the people too hoodwinked to see the plot by the NDP to run locals and natives into the ground?
It’s funny that you talk about locals when the same one they’re trying to form party with brought equipment from China to compete against the local companies? Where is that story? If we are going to speak about locals and local involvement, let us speak like we mean it, not just singling out the people we do not like. Let’s talk about the Cuban and China Man as well if we so care about locals.
Why are we recruiting prison officers from outside who have to be trained here. Would it not be wiser to train sons and daughters of the soil? A St. Lucian as head of prison, he will make sure the money goes out of the territory.. Are we borrowing money for tax payers to be responsible for and it is used to send out to other countries while our people are out of work?
Don’t you all know how things are going now it is best to get prisoner officers who these prisoners do not know? Leave it alone. It’s best.
M—- bringing in all these foreigners to side line locals.I hope them could vote for he
HOW COME WE LOCALS CANT SEE THE ADS AND PEOPLE FROM OVERSEAS CAN SEE THEM?
If you saw the ad, would you have applied fo the job.
We need to make the BVI great again!
you sound like united states president
Hmmm I could tell you look how much local don’t have a job and the government could fine money to bring in these people for work where was that add ? I never saw it on the news that the prison looking for people to work why ball head keep pushing us out for theme Lucian
The last time I checked, when vacancies are published, the relevant institution/business hires from a pool of persons that would have applied for the posts. Let us stop acting stupid as if we don’t know that most locals, especially the youngsters, don’t want to be Police or Prison Wardens. The ones that want to do it are doing it.
I c y people always say tortola Tortola people r stupid. Am I the only one notice n that this is the only government sector that’s hiring? The place is over staff and that’s a fact.
The prison population is confine 2 they wing 98% of the time so what r the reasons so many officers r been hired?
And majority r expariots y aren’t the locals fill n these jobs? N please dont say we r not apply n cause they r!!!!!!!!
