I will learn to brag more — Premier

Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley.

Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley has vowed to highlight his government’s accomplishments after facing criticism from the parlimentary Opposition regarding perceived failures.

During a recent sitting in the House of Assembly, he expressed the need for a more balanced narrative about the territory’s achievements, particularly in the tourism sector.

“Instead of just talking about the bathroom in Long Bay, we went and built a bathroom in Long Bay,” Dr Wheatley said while pointing to specific projects that have been completed. He accused critics of conveniently ignoring and overlooking things done by the government as they moved to focus on other problems without acknowledging that other issues had been solved.

“It’s a political tactic,” the Premier said. “I’m going to learn to brag more. That’s what I need to learn to do and take more pictures. It’s not naturally a part of my character. I just do what needs to be done.”

Record tourist arrivals

The Premier noted that despite negative perceptions, the BVI thrives as a premier tourist destination. “Would you be surprised to learn that the first quarter of 2024 is the most visitors we’ve ever had in the history of the Virgin Islands?” he asked.

He also mentioned that 2023 had the second-highest number of visitors in a calendar year, reinforcing that the BVI remains a popular choice for travellers.

Dr Wheatley encouraged all members of the House to act as ambassadors for the territory, promoting its merits rather than focusing on its flaws. “We out here broadcasting to the whole world how terrible the BVI is. We should be broadcasting to the whole world how much this place is a place that everybody should come and visit. We’re just here, and we’re just dumping on the BVI with every opportunity we get,” he stated.

In response to challenges within the public service, the Premier acknowledged the need for improvements. He assured the public that his government is committed to fixing these issues and is focused on delivering efficient public services.

Ayo hear this man? Hear how he talks and the foolishness that comes out his mouth on a very public stage? For the people who supports this behavior, you all have issues. Look at the things he names as accomplishments, you can not control who wants to visit the territory. For building a public bathroom on an island that never had one available for miles is a naturally decent things to do especially since Gov. Commercialized that beach. That’s what is bragged about. Appalling.

Yes, you must learn to brag more Sir, because you are so shy, your people just don’t know just how much hard work you really do for the country like sipping champagne, international first class travel, and posing with every Tom, Dick or Harry willing to hold your hand for another photo opportunity.
Yes Sir you do need to brag much, much more.

Come on big man. Let’s set a date at HLSCC – you come on stage and get all bragadocious and we will give you thirty minutes to do that.
When you are done explaining how wonderful you are and all the good things that you have done we would then like an opportunity to ask a few questions.
We will expect the answers on the same day, right there. We will expect you or somebody that works for you to have the numbers, know the details and be able to explain the issues.
No more getting back to us, no more delays or obfusication. Face the people and tell us what’s REALLY going on because right now we can’t make any sense of any of this.
