It’s Nomination Day!
As campaigning moves into full swing for the April 24 general election, the Office of the Supervisor of Elections has indicated that it is ready to accept nominations for political candidates today, April 13.
Supervisor of Elections Scherrie Griffin said primary indications suggest this year will not produce a significant change to the number of persons that contested the February 2019 general election.
“Based on the last ballot for 2019, there would have been at least 41 candidates, thereabouts. Pre-indications suggest that we have or anticipate 38 [candidates for this month’s elections] thus far,” Griffin stated.
The Supervisor of Elections said this Nomination Day requires anyone interested in contesting the elections, officially, to appear at the Multipurpose Sports Complex in Road Town between 10am and 1pm or 2pm to 4pm.
Political candidates are required to do so with two voters registered in the electoral district in which they intend to contest, as well as with one witness and a $1,000 cash fee.
And if they are party to a firm that is doing business with government, those candidates must also bring a copy of the declaration published in the gazette of the newspaper.
In addition to independents, four main political parties are fielding candidates for the upcoming general elections — the Virgin Islands Party, the Progressive Virgin Islands Movement, The National Democratic Party, and Progressives United.
