Joel Stevens appointed chairman of BVIHSA
The VIP government will be moving a motion in the House of Assembly to officially appoint Dr Joel Stevens as the new Chairman of the BVI Health Services Authority (BVIHSA).
According to the order paper for the next sitting of the House of Assembly which begins on Friday, the motion will be moved under Health Minister Carvin Malone’s name.
Malone selected Dr Stevens after consultation with the Leader of the Opposition, Marlon Penn.
Dr Stevens was subsequently recommended to the Cabinet for the appointment.
The pre-written motion from Malone said: “Be it resolved that the House of Assembly of the Virgin Islands approves the appointment of Dr Joel Stevens as the Chairman of the BVI Health Services Authority Board for a period of two years, with effect from the 15th day of May 2019.”
Dr Stevens has been a long-serving member of the Board of Directors of the BVIHSA and was president of the medical staff at Providence Hospital in the United States.
He is also a past president of the Howard University Medical Alumni Association, a past member of the board of governors at H Lavity Stoutt Community College, and an Honourary of the Lions Club of Tortola.
Dr Stevens succeeds Ayana Liburd as BVIHSA Chair.

End the socialist theiving health insurance system please.
Now this appointment makes sense.
… Only concern is will he move home because he lives in the US?
Excellent choice. Why? Dr.Stephens brings a wealth of qualification and experience to the table.
The BVI should take comfort in his appointment knowing that his background is solid. The authority will be in good hands.
Also the BVI should take pride and comfort knowing that Dr.Stevens came from among us. He is an excellent example of what is possible for those up and coming young BVIslanders who wish to contemplate a medical career.
I feel very good about Dr. Stephen’s appointment, and know that he will guide the authority where it needs to go at this time.
Kudos to those who suggested his appointment.
Awesome pick VIP
Ask who the Deputy Chairman is. That is the real issue.
Good move. It is necessary for one with serious medical experience to head that board.
