Local social media influencers needed to explain BVI’s key issues
Territorial At-Large Representative Carvin Malone said social media influencers are needed to make the message about the constitutional review more appealing to persons in the territory who are 40 and younger.
As the BVI continues public consultations for the long awaited constitutional review, Malone said it is important for everyone to voice their opinion and show the United Kingdom that the BVI is interested in self governance.
But he said a large section of the population isn’t participating in these types of conversations because the messaging doesn’t appeal to them.
“There is a 40 and under group. I don’t know how to reach them because you have to be on Snapshot, Zoom and TikTok. Even Facebook right now is a dinosaur so we have to find other media,” Malone said on the Honestly Speaking radio show earlier this week.
He said he is already in the process of recruiting two social media influencers to share his important messages with the public.
“I am seeking to engage two people (influencers) as interpreters. I can give the interpreters what we need to put out and have them interpret it for the 40 and under crowd; especially the 30 and under crowd,” Malone said.
In addition to social media influencers, Malone called on local lawyers to join the national conversations about current happenings in politics to increase awareness among members of the public.
“I remain unhappy that we don’t hear enough voices. Whether they (attorneys) are right or wrong, their opinions are important to this,” Malone argued.
The recommendations of the Commission of Inquiry report are expected to strongly influence the BVI’s constitutional review process. Because of this, many are concerned that the next version of the constitution will give elected leaders less power over the territory’s affairs.
At the same time, there are some sections of the public that believe limited powers are necessary to keep local leaders in check and prevent them from abusing the power given to them.

Honarable Carvin, who should be explaining to the people, not those they elect to represent them? You want social media influencers who do more harm than good, stirring up fear, talking a set of nonesense. Do what you were elected to do, serve the people with honesty and integrity, find solutions to the problems. If you cant do that, remove yourself altogether.
For sale my integrity
“…concerned that the next version of the constitution will give elected leaders less power over the territory’s affairs.”
There, I simplified the issue for you.
You actually posted this? So what do you think of that, all, all residents and citizens of the BVI? Social media must do WHAT??? The Constitution is a safety net for the people against the tyranny of possible government abuse of power. That should be the greatest news anyone could have.
Respect! Can we take a look at government and what the people want? So why must you say that the people need this public boost, when in fact, the tyranny appears to be coming from issues within the government? Perhaps we the people need to make it transparently clear and appealing for the government we voted in, that we the people will live by our Constitution thank you.
Really? Just really? What the heck is wrong with these elected people?
Has he considered that the reason younger people and influencers aren’t speaking out in favour of self-governance is because they don’t want it?? especially if the governance is being carried out by our current political “leaders” ??
Next election. Direct rule by UK should be one of the voting choices. Then people can choose not to elect yet another set of cheating lying antitransparency political leaders in it for themselves only. That would offer a real choice for the VI.
He doesnt want to spread the message, he wants to force his thoughts and views on them
nah, that was sold for bargain-basement prices a long time ago.
Surely this gentleman must understand that the reason for the problems he espouses, is, following the COI and numerous arrests in the last 12 months, the people do not trust you and people like you. It’s not rocket science, the local politicians have zero credibility in the eyes of the people, and, changes to the Constitution won’t change that.
1. Why are elected politicians unable to explain the key issues?
2. Doesn’t inability to explain key issues indicate lack of understanding of key issues?
2. How can politician do their job if they don’t understand the needs of the people who elected them?
3. Why is that politicians can’t understand that low participation reflects on their actions?
4. Wouldn’t focus groups of under 40s be more useful to understand their views and concerns?
5. How are influencers qualified to provide accurate statements? Aren’t they just 21st century advertisers who sell the message they are paid to sell?
Honourable Malone, if the citizens can see or have services that the elected officials have provided for the BVI, then you would not have to pay influencers to spread the news of important key issues. Can the citizens see a public high school? Do the citizens have decent medical care on the island. Do they have adequate social services? Do we have proper infrastructure? Do we burn our garbage. These are important key issues that need addressing and will determine the next election!
He forgot how he was throwing insults on his Facebook towards people who supported the COI
Carvin you was onboard with Amdrew when he promised whisleblowers act/you was there againg with a twist of tongue to censor the media so what the hell you talking. You can fool some of the fools but you cant fool all.
No creativity whatsoever! Flatlining big time with those outrageous suggestions. For some strange reason, the candy ‘airheads’ come to my mind.
What the h**l is “Snapshot”?
There are no social media influencers in BVi.
