Lorna Smith is doing great work — Premier

Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley has commended Deputy Premier Lorna Smith for the work the first-time legislator has been doing since she took office earlier this year.

Smith – the Minister for Financial Services, Labour & Trade – held a series of meetings with businesses across the territory when she first took office and immediately got started on work permit issues in the Labour Department.

Premier Wheatley said he’s proud of Smith who has been doing all of this work without adequate staff. And he said the work she is doing as Minister responsible for Financial Services is “paying dividends”.

“The Deputy Premier has been having her meetings and she’s been making sure there’s no outstanding trade licensing applications and work permits. I’m really proud of the work,” Premier Wheatley said in the House of Assembly on September 19. “She will tell you, this is being done without having the staff or proper office space, so we know what will happen when she gets all the persons she needs.”

Smith – the wife of former Premier Dr D Orlando Smith – left quite an indelible mark on representational politics when she joined forces with the Virgin Islands Party and helped them to form the government after the April 2023 elections. This denied the NDP and the other parties a chance to form the government and shocked the rest of the territory who say they never expected such a move from Smith.

Despite the backlash, Smith continues to chant that she is still a woman for the people, even as she focuses on enhancing the BVI’s financial services industry, which is susceptible to ever-changing global shocks.

Smith is also spearheading the BVI’s quest to forge stronger ties with the oil-rich Guyana. She recently announced that visa restrictions for Guyana nationals will be dropped as the BVI seeks benefit from the financial services boom Guyana is set to experience.

On a scale of 1 – 10, you are both doing a negative 10. The only reason —- went to Guyana is to set things up for her brothers and the only reason she takes issue with making the company register public is to hide their stolen assets. Neither care about this little Territory. Stop being fooled BVI People.

The government should not tell us “What a good job they are doing” Thats up to the people to decide if the government is doing a good job or not.
