Money for mistakes but none for revenue generation

Territorial At-Large Representative Stacey Mather criticized the government for what he described as a misallocation of financial resources, accusing the administration of focusing on budgetary errors rather than on revenue generation.

Mather’s critique came in response to the recent announcement of a Schedule of Additional Provisions (SAP) in the House of Assembly, which aimed to address a massive budget shortfall for a new salary structure for public workers. Initially, $11.7 million had been budgeted for salaries, but further analysis by the Ministry of Finance revealed that the required amount was significantly higher, totaling $25,056,518.

Mather expressed concern about the long-term implications of the government’s financial allocations and accused the administration of failing to acknowledge its mistakes, particularly regarding the estimated $20 million budgetary error.

“This isn’t a spelling error in a WhatsApp chat; this is $20 million,” Mather emphasized. The first-term lawmaker highlighted the seriousness of the issue and the government’s lack of apology. He further illustrated the impact of the blunder by comparing the mismanagement to 20 school backpacks, each filled with a million dollars.

Mather also criticized the budget distribution, noting the discrepancy between funds allocated for mistakes and those needed for essential services. “The Ministry of Health needs money for the hospital, and the Minister of Communications and Works needs more than $1.4 million for asphalt and roads; yet, we find $20 million for errors?” he asked.

Additionally, Mather addressed the lack of funding for revenue-generating projects, pointing out missed opportunities for fiscal growth. “We couldn’t give them the money to do what they needed to do, but we find the money for a mistake that was made. How?” he queried.

Mather called for a change in leadership approach, stressing the need for accountability and genuine repentance from the government. “Don’t get offended when somebody questions your ability to lead because we are all accustomed to it,” Mather said. “Not everyone needs to sugarcoat and rub your back and tell you’re doing a good job.”
