Motorists endangering lives on ‘closed’ roads

Minister of Communication and Works Mark Vanterpool has accused motorists of endangering lives by disobeying ‘Road Closed’ signs that have been erected to facilitate road repairs – some of which are being done ‘into the night’.
He indicated that such disobedience resulted in an incident on Tortola yesterday, August 27.
“I am appealing to motorists to please cooperate when ‘Road Closed’ signs are erected,” added Vanterpool.
“Today (Sunday), the signs were sometimes ignored. This poses a danger to motorists and the workers as well. One vehicle was touched with equipment unavoidably as they were not expected on the road.”
The minister, in a post on social media, said roads are being repaired across the territory following damage caused by the recent tropical wave.
According to him, the Public Works Department (PWD) and private company BVI Paving have been ‘working against the rainy weather and the clock to restore the Fort Hill to Belle Vue Road’.
He said other areas ‘high on the priority list to be continued on Monday and all week’ include Joe’s Hill, Long Look to Fat Hogs Bay, and Huntums Ghut. “Other patching also continues across the country,” Vanterpool noted.
