Murder accused Hasani Frett granted bail

A police vehicle parked outside the building that houses the High Court in Road Town.

Hasani Frett, the man charged in connection to the early-morning killing of a man in Road Town on Sunday, February 12, has been granted bail.

The accused man was granted bail when he appeared before High Court Judge Thomas Astaphan last Friday.

Judge Astaphan offered Frett $100,000 bail signed with one surety. Twenty thousand dollars of that bail amount is a cash component that must be paid upfront.

Several bail conditions were also attached to his bail and these include regular reporting to the police, surrendering his travel documents, and subjecting himself to unannounced police checks, among other things.

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) had objected to bail but was unsuccessful. The accused is represented by defence attorney E Leroy Jones.

Frett is charged with murder, inflicting grievous bodily harm, and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life. However, allegations outlined by DPP Tiffany Scatliffe Esprit during a previous court appearance indicated that Frett was not the shooter.

“The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) had objected to bail but was unsuccessful.“

Yet in his initial hearing the DPP said there is video evidence he didn’t commit the murder.

The DPP’s losing streak continues. Unfortunately, unpleasantness and arrogance don’t substitute for legal ability and judgment. Time for a new DPP please.

If not already, the DPP’s appointment should be on a contractual basis to be reviewed upon expiration.

  18. What a dpp! says:

Well the whole of cabinet knew they were signing off on the CSC no value for money contracts fraud. When they getting lock up with a request for bail to be denied. And mark you, the cabinet is chaired by the Governor.

  19. What a dpp!2 says:

By the way, the governor acting as Chairman of cabinet, that would make him the driver of the vehicle. So anything cabinet does, it falls on the governor.

On another note, today is not the day for this. Happy birthday to the late Hon. H Lavity Stoutt.

  25. Lol says:

If when someone is arrested and charged for a crime especially one like murder, the authorities is required to state to the court the facts of case that means what gave them the legal rights and power to take that person freedom and liberty from them.

But after listening to the facts given by the Director of Public Prosecution ( DPP) in this case I am still waiting.

So I am asking the COP and the DPP for the rest of the facts of their case to support the charges brought against this man.

The public is waiting. Remember COP and DPP we are the Jurors that are going to make up the Jury. Not you,so when you are coming, come good.
Oh yes, the public will like to see those criminals off the street and the BVIs a safer and better place but do your job and do it properly.

  26. hmm says:

The harborer is worst than the thief. This is the worst decision. How could you let this man go on bail. He hasn’t given up the name of the actual shooter who shot from his vehicle while he was in the vehicle which makes him accessory to murder. He should be charged with the murder since he has not given up the name. Only in the BVI. He has access to so much money from ** so he can skip down anytime smh.

  28. Lol says:

Why is this person still holding the post or position of the Director of Public Prosecution ( DPP) Can someone answer please. Why?
What are the authorities waiting on,what?
What is the Governor and the Legal Service Commission waiting on?

Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles can see the incompetence and dishonesty in this DPP,and the COP.
We all know that those two men are blind and can not see and they can see that this DPP is not capable of doing that job so why the local authorities can not see that.

Also where is the Commissioner of Police and the Two DCPs not one but Two,to tell the DPP,that No my Police Officers are not doing this ignorance.

Can you all imagine in this modern day and age with all these so call bright, and intelligent Officers you promote that’s the best you all can do.
As much as we want to see the criminals off the streets and the BVIs a safe and better place we will like to see it done correctly.

Commissioner Collins and DPP your actions are very dishonest action.
I only hope that Frett’s Lawyer is getting ready with the Law suit because there is clearly, No evidence there, None to convict no body.Wow.
With these type of people in position, I CRY FOR MY BVI,I CRY.
