NDP has turned locals against expats for political gains — Fahie

Opposition Leader Andrew Fahie

The National Democratic Party (NDP) government is being accused of causing or encouraging segregation between locals and expatriates.

Opposition Leader Andrew Fahie levelled those accusations at a VIP press conference on Saturday; describing the move as a political play from the NDP.

“[I encourage] those who are Belongers by birth, those who are Belongers by status, those you are non-Belongers not to join into this frenzy that the current government is doing by trying to take the expatriate community to turn them against the indigenous and take the indigenous and turn them against the expatriate community just for votes,” Fahie said.

To support his claims, the opposition leader cited a number of NDP-commissioned Immigration policies, which he suggested prejudiced the local expat community — especially those from the wider Caribbean.

One such policy Fahie mentioned was the government’s decision to exempt Chinese nationals from the BVI’s visa entry requirements. The opposition leader then went on to denounce segregation in the British Virgin Islands.

“The Virgin Islands Party is all about the people whether they come from the Caribbean islands or not,” the party chairman said. “We’re not the ones who took the visa regime off of the Chinese and then leave the rest of people in the Caribbean, the ones who tell you that they love you is who did it. We’re not the ones who carry you up to get a residency, the ones who said they love you is who did it. We’re not the ones who carry your work exemption up to 20 years, the ones who said they love you is who did it. So they are talking love but they’re not showing love.”

“The Virgin Islands Party will be about uniting the people of the Virgin Islands and not dividing just to look for votes. That will leave this country in a mess that we will never recover from,” he added.

  6. More lies from Fahie says:

VIP, Claude and the founders of PVIM realize they made a mess with attacking Myron over the born here issue so they trying now to turn it around by blaming NDP. Was it NDP that wrote an email saying the Myron can’t run for Premier and threatening to go Privy Council? That’s was the VIP including Andrew Fahie. I recall even hearing Carvin Malone call in on the radio about it. Claude was one saying Myron couldn’t be Premier because his family isn’t from here and then he sent his uncle John on the radio to say we are all one because they realized the damage they caused. Don’t forget the talk shows with Carl Dawson, Julian Gordon and others. Then the new PVIM party was formed because thenso called indigenous didn’t want to follow Myron. So I guess all this is NDP’s fault. It’s NDP trying to cause division by making all these other groups speak out and show their bigotry. Bad NDP!

This is why the black man will always get left behind. At such a critical time for the BVI, we should be working together united, but instead we fighting, and while we fight the rest of the world watch.

        • @Left Behind says:

Absolutely correct, but it is also a major psychological problem of the Black man, one of which he is now fully aware, but is rather psychologically helpless in correcting.

If, however, if the last fifty thousand years of his African history, up to the beginning of recorded European history, was to be taught in every home, school and university for a thousand years, we will begin to see the evolution of a new Black man and mind.

As for the Willie Lynch papers, they were master pieces of how to dehumanise and retard the mind of the Black man.

The mental psychological realities and manifestations we see and live everyday.

Look for example, at how we disrespect and tear down our leaders from top to bottom, but one will never read a single negative blog about the Governor or Chief of Police.

Why, in the minds of many, they are our God ordained masters, believe it or, even if such a thought makes one sick to the stomach.

So lastly, yes, they are watching and waiting to see who next we will select that they may continue their goal of acquiring the rest of our lands.

And remember, they are patient, cunning and very long term planners. We had better wake up from our psychological stupor of fighting each syndrome before we find ourselves in a place we do not want to be in again.

It’s interesting that I don’t hear Myron saying anything at all about this issue but Fahie and all the others are the ones who keep bringing it up. Check on the other site and you will see it as well. That tells me that they are trying to undo something that they created by now trying to blame the innocent party for what they have caused. I remember Fahie’s debate in the HOA on the human rights commission he turned it into an argument about expats vs locals over rights in the constitution. I remember them bringing up this born here issue every time Myron runs. I remember seeing the VIP email threatening to go as far as privy council to stop Myron. I relieved Claude frothing at the mouth about the born here issue. I remember hearing the talk show host spewing their hate about Myron on the radio around the both here issue. I remember all that!

Now that these guys realize how many voters have expat ties, everyone is trying to run away from it but the expat voters and connected persons will not be fooled. Under Fahie and VIP visas was put in place for Jamaicans following a public outcry of then increase in murders and violent crimes they were convicted of.

He needs to tell the truth about why certain countries have visas. If it needs to be reviewed let us agree on that. but we know why they are there

The NDP created the policy to grant residency and belonger status to persons who lived and contributed to the BVI for 20 or more years, and thus created an expectation that if you were law abiding you can get residency. Under VIP residency was used as a political tool and given to persons after 5 to 7 years in a subjective manner. Under VIP, law abiding persons with children and grand children were living here for 30, 40 years and could not get anything. it was strictly depending on who you know you got status.

It will not benefit BVI to continue to exclude the significant majority of residents from the voting process. How can it be right, to have a small minority rule over the majority (like South Africa)? Ex-pats are not allowed to have any voice and we’re told “if you dont like it, boats leaving every day”. One day, us Ex-Pats may unite and revolt against this discrimination against us and our “born here” children. Time to have some grown up conversations about immigration by politicians and the people. Its not us and them, its I and I.

Estimate 30,000 residents. Only 40% are Belongers, so that makes 12,000. Figure 1/3 of those are below voting age, that leaves 8,000. Assume 2/3 are registered to vote, now you have about 5,300 voters. But, if voter turn out is 50%, then you’re down to about 2,600 (i.e. less than 10% of the estimated population) deciding the fate of the Territory. Is that a democracy? Is a system like this likely to work out well for the greater good of the Territory. You decide, but the bottom line is that precious few here can vote.

There is nothing legal or illegal. There is no law guiding the process, only policies.

The challenge for the outgoing Premier right now is because of the vitriol the Governor has stalled the process as there are well over 200 hundred applications pending for some time now. The policy was to approve a certain number annually.
