New leaders aren’t the answer to BVI’s political problems — Pickering

Former legislator Dr Kedrick Pickering.

As many in the BVI continue to call for a new set of leaders to transform the territory’s politics, former Deputy Premier Dr Kedrick Pickering has stated that “fresh people” aren’t the answer to the BVI’s political problems.

Dr Pickering, who recently announced that he will be contesting the next general election as a Territorial At-Large candidate, said the BVI would benefit most from a combination of young leaders with fresh ideas and experienced leaders who have garnered wisdom over the years.

“I think any right-thinking person can see that where the country is right now, it needs a few persons who understand not just local issues but major international issues that we have to confront,” Dr Pickering said in a recent interview with 284 Media.

Tensions between the BVI and the United Kingdom (UK) increased this year after a Commission of Inquiry (COI) report recommended direct UK rule through a suspension of the territory’s constitution. This would snatch power away from elected representatives and place it in the hands of the governor.

Many residents have blamed the current elected leaders for the breakdown in the relationship with the UK and have called for more women and young people to give the territory a ‘fresh start’ by running for elected office.

But Dr Pickering said young minds by themselves cannot bring the ‘fresh start’ that the BVI is seeking.

“Of course we need a fresh start. We need to reset, we need to rethink and in that entire process, we need all minds involved. I will never sit and tell somebody we need 13 experienced people to run this country and I would never say we need 13 fresh people to run this country either. We need a good mix of persons who are able, willing, qualified and genuinely committed to run the country. A good idea is a good idea no matter where it comes from,” Dr Pickering argued.

Dr Pickering is a former member of the National Democratic Party (NDP) and a well-respected medical doctor in the territory. During his time in office, his party was plagued by many scandals, some of which were the subject of the recently-concluded COI.

However Dr Pickering has not been the centre of any major political scandals and is touted as one who can help the BVI during this time of political uncertainty.

He was not at the center of any scandal because he has no interest in the locality of Politics. He only uses his, office ministry and the system. He was not interested in doing anything. He just wanted to make deals allegedly.

That’s why he has nothing to show for his years of politics. But it seems he was protected in the COI for I’m sure if the water rights and other things in his ministry were investigated it would have been interesting allegedly. But you all remember he has powerful people behind him and he is been pushed don’t go to sleep on him.

You are not the answer for us. You had twenty years and we have not seen what you have done. You had eight years as a minister with no results. Time to give others a chance. Frankly, I don’t trust you around white people.

Yes we want fresh young energetic minds. Elders don’t have to be in elected sea5s to provide guidance and share wisdom. Are you trying is that the only time and the only way you can share what you have learned is is you are elected? So if you aren’t elected you won’t provide guidance to the younger ones?

So you are only after power!

After 20 years in office you have not one single thing to show for it. You accomplished nothing! Those hydroponic farms didn’t produce even one single cherry tomato. Brandywine Bay beach is a goat sanctuary. Anegada lands werent distributed. Labor Department is still one of the worst departments in the Service. What have you done in 20 years? Let’s hear the excuses.

Sit your Cuban behind down and groom the next rep for the 7th. Help shape the next generation of elected officials. Share your wisdom with them if you truly care about the BVI.

But do not put your name on the ballot.

Pickering is right in saying we need a mix. Look how our Elected Representatives who have NO clue about Politics shot down the amended terms of reference for the Constitution review. All were not bad. Was it because of who brought them before the HOA? Nonsense. If something is good it doesnt matter who brings it to the HOA. That tells me that the Members of the HOA needs serious training on politics. Seems like only the Nose could smell it but the Eyes were shut down. Anyways, here we go!!

    1st District: ???
    2nd District: Karl Dawson
3rd District: ??? (Frazer under investigation.)

    7th District: Picko Moff
    8th District: Marlon Penn
9th District: Lyra George ( Vincent under investigation)

I agree to a point. From what I am seeing with our current group they just don’t have the intellectual acumen to run this country at this time. But I also don’t want the same old BS as well.

We need a group with a good vision, to get our infrastructure in order. Schools falling apart, sewage, electricity, water, roads etc..

They need to be able to articulate their approach and we should hold them to that standard they set while campaigning.

Look an airline/airport update to the US will be a good thing but do we need it now with all the other issues?

A first class ferry service connected to flights to and from St Thomas will hold us for a while.

We also have to be realistic that everything can’t be done at once.

  12. @ Eyes wide open says:

    Amen to that.
His name can’t call with anything but he didn’t do anything for 20 years.
These people in the BVI damage who they want to damage:

Why wasn’t an audit done on that fiasco of a project at Brandywine Bay. Remember it was stopped because it didn’t have planning approval. That nonsense cost tax payers over a million dollars.

Why wasn’t an audit done on the nearly 10M spent on the airport expansion preliminary works that was not approved by the HOA and there is nothing to show except Wilson’s bank account, for what was done.

When you have the right friends in certain positions you get protection.

But if ayo know what good for ayo, ayo would leave Kedrick where he is.

Congrat’s on somehow making this about “white people” when its nothing to do with them , your racist rules mean no one with a brain can actually run for gov since your racist policies keep them out, you have the most hostile laws i have had the misfortune to see, if someone is black they get a pass but if they are white its there fault somehow, you need to stop watching CNN its pure lies and pandering to your victim mentality which you all hang onto dearly , if white people actually treated you in their countries like you treat white people you would be screaming racist from the roof tops ( and looting random stores too)

Who knew our legislators were so funny? I’ve spent this past week LMAO at the uproarious, self-serving and tone deaf things some of our politicians have said.

  21. Quietly Watching says:

I have to agree with the Doc here. Younger minds that are without experience in “management” will only dig us deeper into the hole that we are in. It was my opinion last election that Hon. Ronnie Skelton was the best hope for us and it still is. When hiring someone for a job, they have to be qualified to hold said position. Hon. Skelton is a proven leader and Hon. Fahie was not. The proof is there as to where he has led us.

Yes, we need some fresh young minds to hone and sharpen towards future excellence. You only have to go to the bank to understand what happens when you place young minds on the front lines unaided.

I think it is time that we sit down and we think country before we cast our vote. Our infrastructure is crumbling and lawlessness is on an all time high, not to mention sickness and death. The next election process is crucial to our retention of livelihood as we know it in these beautiful Virgin Islands. Let us think country and not self.

I would like to say that when blogging, we should try to be factual but not unkind to the point of destruction. I am guilty of being not so kind in my blogs sometimes, but as times travel forward towards the future with death and mayhem, we have to remember the younger generation behind and what our actions are doing to them. Kindness, love for each other and Jehovah God is what will keep our country together, not ugliness and pay outs. Let us concentrate on being God fearing and kind. That will serve us well as a people and as a country.

  26. Suggestion out side the box. says:

It is not it has been brought forward before, though not so expanded, but never acted upon.

Yet, it has tremendous potential for good if implemented.

    1) Seek out the (an) individual student from the top three grade levels at both high schools, and individuals from the private sector also, who are demonstrating good and bourgeoning intelligence, reasonable communication aptitudes, good manners and respect, humblenees and eagerness to learn.

2)Create a selection plan/methodology within the governing structure, on how it should be executed.

    3) Have each chosen candidate enter into the duties/chores and others of the Governor, Premier, minister, district representative and department chair.

Teach, show, demonstrate and allow each candidate to be the head person for the (a) (with repeats where decided upon) day, with guidance of course.

Indeed, if done properly and consistently will foster greater appreciation for the governing and managing roles, among others, and would create minds better suited for future leadership responsibilities within the political arena.

Frankly, such an approach has many dimensional products and benefits for the elevation and upward and forward progress of the country, in my opinion.

  28. shaking my head says:

We clearly dont want anyone decent in politics. If we did we would have elected decent candidates already. Instead we insist on folks who pander to individual wants and their own corrupt greed cycle after cycle. We celebrate mediocre candidates and wallow in their ineptitude, vindictiveness, corruption, and very shallow debates and empty plans. Let’s just be honest with our selves now. Doc you can come through with the same drivel that you have peddled for decades…we obviously like it so.

We still have not hit the bottom of the barrel as yet. Wait until all of the criminal and other investigations have concluded and then we can see which candidates we can select out of the pit that we have descended into.
