The BVI’s athletes have touched down in Tokyo and the world had their first glimpse of them during the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games at the National Stadium in Tokyo, Japan Friday morning.

Local track sensation Kyron McMaster and his swimming compatriot, Elinah Phillip marched through the stadium as the territory’s flag-bearers at this morning’s event.

The two local athletic ambassadors were aptly dressed in the BVI’s colours — Phillip wore a white cultural dress while McMaster donned a stylish white blazer decorated with the BVI’s signature cultural designs.

The competition

McMaster will be the first of the BVI’s total three athletes scheduled to compete at these Summer Olympic Games.

He begins his Olympic campaign on Thursday, July 29 at 9:55 pm (local time) by competing in the heats of the Men’s 400-metre Hurdles. From there, he hopes to advance to the semi-finals of the event.

Phillip will be next to compete for the BVI at 6 am on Friday, July 30. She will swim in the heats of the Women’s 50-metre freestyle event. And if that goes well, she will advance to the semi-finals at 10:32 pm (local time) that same day.

The BVI’s final athlete to compete will be Long Jumper Chantel Malone. The qualifying round of her event starts at 8:50 pm (local time) on Saturday, July 31.

BVI News will bring updates on our local athletes as the Olympics progress.

It was a pleasure to see our representatives at the opening ceremony as well as those from the USVI.

Maybe it is time to put pressure on the USVI and force them to call themselves by their official name which is the United States Virgin Islands, the world was watching today and they marched as the Virgin Islands. It is time that the distinction be made.

I think they can call themselves whatever they want. We know we are the British Virgin Islands no matter what they call the USVI.

The BVI should be forced to call themselves “petty and jealous”. The BVI officially calls themselves the British Virgin Islands because guess what they are under UK. And the USVI calls themselves United States Virgin Islands because they are under US. So their name is a little longer and they say VI for short, they are larger in population, wider known and BVI gets bent out of shope over it. If their airport full. BVI feels they are stealing their tourist. Like hello do you even realize how many tourist land in USVI that don’t head to the ferry dock to go Tortola? Guess what far more than what goes Tortola. BVI just need to stop its petty nonsense and just focus on getting the country in order. Because its the same USVI you run to when you don’t want UK help and its the same US dollars you would die if you loose. And if you want to stand out at the Olympics and other world stage (1) invest more in your people and (2) get some better looking outfits

what are you congratulating? Turning up at a
Ceremony? It’s traditional to wait until we’ve done well in an event.

Actually, “The Virgin Islands of the USA” is the official name of the USVI. But I agree with the need for a distinction with “The Virgin Islands” of the UK.

why isn’t the USVI and the BVI enough of a distinction for you? are you really struggling with that?

    • Not complicated says:

The name of the UK owned islands is THE VIRGIN ISLANDS. Google it

      • But says:

Nobody knows what you’re talking about if you say the Virgin Islands. Everyone knows we are the BVIs.

      • Werewolf says:

Ok. I googled it. It says the Virgin Islands are the British, US
        and Spanish archipelago.
That shows that none of us are just the Virgin Islands
and we are the British Virgin Islands.
Why is that difficult to understand?

Congratulations to our athletes for qualifying for the 2021 Olympics. We are so proud of you. We wish you God’s speed in your different endeavours, swimming, high jumping and 400 metre hurdles. We love you and will be cheering as loudly as we can for you. Only your best must you leave out there on the track, in the pool and in the pit. This is the biggest stage there is for elite athletes like you. Go Chantel! Go Kyron! Go Elinah! We truly wish you well. Be safe out there.
