Opposition Leader lobbies for more businesses to be allowed to open

Opposition Leader Marlon Penn has called for officials to find a way to allow more businesses to be open during the current curfew period, given the financial constraints being faced locally.

Late last week, the government ordered several categories of businesses closed and implemented a ‘7 pm to 5 am’ curfew after the territory saw a major surge in COVID-19 cases.

Speaking on the NDP radio programme last evening, Penn commended the government’s efforts to curtail the spread of the virus and offered support for their campaign to get persons vaccinated.

He noted that solidarity was needed now more than ever but said it was imperative for government to also find ways for other businesses to operate safely.

“I know there are certain businesses that we have to shut down because of whatever. But we have to strengthen our protocols where some of these businesses continue to operate in a safe way,” Penn said.

The Opposition Leader also advocated for business continuity strategies and redundancies to be put in place for times when disaster strikes; especially in cases where critical services such as financial services and electricity are being provided.

Penn said he felt persons were lackadaisical in showing respect for the established social-distancing protocols and suggested that stricter measures be put in place to ensure better adherence going forward.

Ignorance of People is going to be the Territory’s demise. Instead of pushing for this try encouraging people to be safe to live to visit these businesses. Dead People can not patronize any place but the cemetery.

So basically Penn said absolutely nothing. This is too much for him, the government we have is not perfect but they are doing better than this guy could do right now.

What was the point of Penn saying anything at all? Was it to get poly pts from his supporters b/c he has no plan no vision no ideas and opposes just to oppose.

Now as leader of the opposition with all the grief right now this is all you have to say?

What about a word of comfort and encouragement to the people. Come on! Not everything is for political points. This is serious!!!

Most businesses should be open really? Cant you see most businesses closed voluntarily and are taking strict precautions to limit contact.

We need to think health and wellbeing over money. As long as there is life there is hope.

The businesses that are closed although it affects me personally but not financially need to be closed especially right now. Why would anyone want clients in front of their face with no mask just to style or cut their hair. Which companies that are closed are absolutely necessary right now or can operate well without the use of a mask. Marlon is just pandering. He know there is a large segment of people that are affected and he is playing to that.

Which business more likely to spread the virus super markets thats crowded where everyone touches everything before they buy or a Bar where you have to move the mask to drink?. I super Markets getting an easy passed. They can be the most popular spreader of the Virus..Everyone touch an Apple,an Orange Banana, etc before they buy…If Super Market can stay open all businesses can stay open following the protocols

You’re some kind of genius. There are few things every human being need to live, that’s air, food and water. When they close the supermarket how will we get food? Does every person have a home garden? Do you have the magic spell to create food out of thin air? Do we have an unlimited supply of water? Do you have the magic spell to create water? All the stuff we need to live are in the supermarkets. It’s a risk we have to take because the need is great. What brilliant idea will you come with next? Turn off power?
