PHOTO OF THE DAY: What a dump!
This BVI News photo taken in Sea Cow’s Bay today, January 14, in the Third District on Tortola highlights an ongoing issue with indiscriminate dumping. Solid waste, including old appliances, a mattress and even a door, have been left along the roadside, creating an eyesore for the community. The garbage has been lying there for weeks, raising concerns about environmental health and cleanliness in the area.

some of them truck mam lazy get pay to do a dump run n just go by the closest garbage
We know which corner some publications stand in. let the strategising begin. But the fact is that its the Public that decides who represents them and many times they can see through all the false narratives and attempts to characterize administrations as less then in an attempt to frame a cause for UK rule. We know there are issues , what do you suggest as solutions.
There should be a place where residents can take their solid waste such as these items pictured for disposal.
I am uncertain if one can blame the person(s) who placed those items there. Presumably they were placed there to be picked up.
The pictured bin is clearly too small for those items, and if they have been there reportedly for weeks, this tells me that the folks responsible for removing garbage has not been doing their jobs for those several weeks.
Solution going forward:
Create a designated solid waste disposal area in each districts where residents can take these large disposable items. Once there, those items can be crushed or disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner.
@Solid waste management is needed -There literally is a place to take bulky waste… THE DUMP! People are just too lazy
@Mr. Shovels: have you considered that maybe they don’t have a way to get bulky items to the bin rather than being too lazy?
A solution is to have a designated big waste collection day on a regular basis at specific spots, and then making sure discarded items are disposed of promptly. However, the nub of the issue is that nobody wants to pay for garbage disposal. Yet, in most places, people have to pay a monthly garbage bills. We also have the age old problem of general mismanagement, and no collective desire to have a clean and neat island.
Exactly , we need to change mindset to what CAN we do instead of constant what we CAN’T do.
Them need hire a truck mehson..
No wonder they call SEA COWS BAY HOG CITY AKA THE NEW GHETTO. STINK AND DIRTY. You people down SEA COWS BAY HAVE NO PRIDE IN YOUR VILLAGE. YOU ALL ARE TURNING INTO FILTHY DIRTY PEOPLE NO MATTER YOUR STATUS. SHAME OF YOU ALL.
Who said that it’s people from sea cows bay dumping there?
I’m
In the second district and I’ve seen people from all over dump garbage outside bins there and they don’t live in that district
Install surveillance cameras in these areas and upon identifying the individual or individuals disposing of these types of items a hefty fine to be paid within 30days or be jailed for 3mths( no matter who they are).
I’m sorry for leaving my trash there. I make $6 an hour, pay $800 for rent, and have under $100 left for groceries and bills. The truck man charges $60, leaving me with about $30 for the month.
Independence them say
The big trucks parked adjacent to the community center and the manner in which he keeps the space looks nastier than this. At least these items will be moved. Mr. RS needs to be addressed as well.
There are more outsiders living in Sea Cows Bay than the original residents, They bring their damned nasty habits from their countries of origin and practice them here. I am sick and tired of this behavior.
The solid waste department needs to step up its game and install cameras to catch the perpetrators, and prosecute them
And what makes it more of an eyesore finger holding display of a eyesore and finger holding tip of nose to curb the stench of Sea Cows Bay, your loving DEPUTY PREMIER is from and lives in Sea Cows Bay. Now ain’t that something with a side order of smothered Southern pork chops and gravy. You would figure a man with the title of Deputy Premier would make sure his District where he lives would be taken better care of. Hey, my bad, His boss District is dirty and embarrassing as well.
Put some hidden cameras in the problem areas and it will stop. You catch them on camera, you issue them a fine and call it a day.
AS LONG AX THE GABBAGE IS NOT DUMPED IN THE BUSHES WHERE IT CANNOT BE SEEN ,THEN IT BE
SHOULD BE PICKED UP AND TAKEN TO THE GABBAGE BY THE DEPARTMENT WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR DOING THAT JOB / BUT WE SHOULD NOT BE SUPPRISED ( LACKADAISICALNESS ) IS THE NEW NORM • THAT DON’T HAPPEN TOO OFTEN, SO HOW MUCH HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS IS IT GOING TO COST THE GOVERNMENT TO JUST SEND A (BACKHOE & A TRUCK TO TAKE THE GABBAGE TO THE DUMP , NOT EVERYBODY CAN AFFORD TO PAY A TRUCK / MR PREMIER HAVE PITY ON THE POOR – NUH
Saying ppl cannot afford to pay a truck to the dump— tell me —how they get the new appliance to their homes —- HOW THEY GET THE OLD APPLIANCES TO THE BIN? — they didn’t put them on their head nor back —- the same vehicle that put it by the bin Could have gone down the road
I spent a few weeks in St. Kitts December, 2023 and note that the following was done to help dispose of large garbage items such as Stoves, Refrigerators, Freezers, Washers and Dyers, Doors, Windows, Drums, Bikes, Computers, Desks, Chairs, Tables, Beds and Mattresses, Sofas, Rugs, Fans, Microwaves, Air Fryers and other small appliances, etc. A huge pickup truck was hired by the SK Government to collect all of these old and damaged items to bw taken to a particular section of the dump situated at Conaree. The truck actually spent two days in each Village and Town collecting these items. The Workers even helped clearing items from my family’s garage and also their Tool shed. Perhaps, VI Government needs to implement such a measure of this. It will help to eliminate eyesore in such places as Purcell Estate, East End, Sea Cow’s Bay and Huntums Ghut just to name a few places where it seems this problem is a common occurrence.
