PHOTOS: TS Philippe brings floods, infrastructural damage

As the territory continues to feel the impacts of Tropical Storm (TS) Philippe passing through the Virgin Islands, residents have been reporting significant flooding in several parts of the territory.

For instance, areas like Road Town and surrounding communities such as Huntums Ghut and Purcell have experienced considerable flooding overnight and into the early hours of Wednesday morning, October 4.

This heavy rainfall has triggered landslides, leaving substantial deposits of soil in affected areas. Adding to the challenges, Philippe has unleashed strong winds that have uprooted trees.

Our news centre has seen several images of vehicles partially submerged in flood waters, badly undermined roads, and other signs of property and infrastructural damage. However, the full extent of this damage is not yet clear. It is also unclear whether anyone has been injured because of the tropical storm.

Meanwhile, TS Philippe has also led to power outages and the closure of businesses. According to the Department of Disaster Management, lingering moisture and instability from Philippe will maintain a heightened chance for shower and thunderstorm activity over and around the territory during the next 24 hours.

Photo No. 6 from top. The newly paved road by firstbank. I figured that was going to be a problem because I never saw any drainage (or adequate drainage). When will we learn?

Look at the failure of our elected officials. Their focus is to get on a plane enjoying Tax payers money, no plan, no preparation just excuses and blame, now its going to be Britain fault. I was one in favour of a Britain take over for a yr. Fix the declining situation then hand it back to us. As they did in Caymans now cayman is booming #1 in almost everything.

If only there was a way that the BVI could borrow a 3 or 4 hundred million dollars.

    If only.

Do not like posting such comments least they are used as more fodder to encourage the UK on intervening and over taking our home.

That many, many do not wish for in their life time. Woe be unto us if that materializes..

But, 3-4 million will go. the same way all the other millions, toda, trillions went, into pockets of thieves and criminals posing as honorable elected officials.

We have got to encourage honest minded people who have a sense of political hygiene to enter into and become elected to lead us out the current mirage we are in, where elected offce is an opprtunity to become thieves, criminals and more.

Well I guess all that wrong in the BVI will be blamed on the weather.

Failure to do the basic infrastructure.
too much energy spent on free concerts and trips all over the world.
BVI cnat do the basics, roads, water , electricity, schools or clinics, and all the politicians want is independence to have less oversight……

When will we stop taking L’s (losses) for continuing failures and ineptitude by our elected representatives?!?! The country is in a mess! Imagine if this were a hurricane with more winds and destruction. Can the government be sued for damages caused by their lack of proper planning, management and maintenance of their infrastructure?

They go in the HOA and poppy show and we get shafted and laughed at. When will the revolution be televised?!!??!

There are many injustices happening in the BVI where it is mostly from the high handed games of the Governor & UK & the elected officials as well as some of us as citizens. There is none exempted and this have God upset. The freedom of the people is now a direct order from God. In seven days another disaster will hit unless all of us repent and do right by the people. Governor take heed. Premier take heed. Uk officials over BVI affairs take heed. Some pastors take heed. Some elected officials take heed. Commissioner of police & immigration take heed. God is watching. I will be back in eight days time as some of you will take this as a joke rather than a friendly reminder to repent immediately and start to free the people and ask God for forgiveness and mercy.

Likewise stop wasting your time looking for righteous politicians. The BVI has tried them all, the young, the old, the experienced, the inexperienced, the educated, the business owners. Who should we try next?

I am not advocating for the UK to take over anything. Even they don’t seem to want to take over this place.

You all can spin it however you want, blame whomever you want. The fact is in order for the BVI to get itself back on track, funds are needed. Real serious funds and yes, a multi-year plan. Not pipe dreams and hope speeches every four years.

    @first warning,
Stop being a religious phenetic, I could remember when we were moving from the 70’s to the 80’s people gather in their church saying god is coming for his world. You need to know science and stop being so foolish, it’s people like you Columbus came and spoke to to put down the diamond and gold and beach front land and he take over. We need technology not theology.

Amazing we’re in this state as a tropical territory given the billions paid into the Government since the 1980s. It rains a lot during hurricane season. Every year we are taken by surprise!

I remember after Irma all these technical experts were sent out from UK but also Barbados. The ones I met were well qualified and had worked in the public sector for years. We took no notice of what they had to say, and here we are.

We also rejected the $400m loan guarantee from the UK, because it came with conditions.

Let me buy some more Wellington boots and another shovel!

As per usual the comments on these news sites always filled with ignorant stupidity. Would you all still be lauding the $400million loan guarantee if one of the conditions was to allow same-sex marriage? Would you all still be lauding the $400million loan guarantee if the Govt had to make cuts to civil service which would put you, your grandma, sister, cousin out of a job? Ayo got to know what ayo does be asking for! So sickening.

We all agree there is poor infrastructural planning how tf is that elected officials fault!? Do they approve building plans? Noooo. Ayo dumb

    Flooding in Tortola

The cause of these major flooding is due to poor planning in the past. No proper engineering, just fast development without any vision of what will happen in the future.

We fill up the Sea, fill up the Ponds, sopped up the Wells and the water have nowhere to go.

We pave the guts with concrete and filled them up with garbage, derelict furniture, appliances and equipment and other debris. What do you expect?

We build buildings, apartments and homes all over the place – We cut roads here and there without studding the structure of the land.

When I was growing up in the 60’s and 70’s we had a lot of rain – but we never had all this flooding.

All of these recent flooding we are presently experiencing is a man made disaster and human errors.
