Political party system has failed BVI — Skelton Cline

The BVI’s political party system has not adequately served the needs of the people of the territory, Pastor Claude Skelton Cline has argued.

“The party system, in my view, is floundering and has faltered and some even say have failed the people of these Virgin Islands,” Skelton Cline said while speaking on his Honestly Speaking show yesterday.

The controversial host, who previously said the territory was turned into a failed state by one political party, asked what viable options might exist that can be laid before the people of the BVI as elections approach in the coming year.

In the meantime, Skelton Cline questioned his guest, Territorial At-Large Representative Carvin Malone, on whether he (Malone) was disconcerted or disappointed that more voices from particular quarters in the territory have not joined or lent their expertise in any way that helps to navigate the country during one of its most challenging times since slavery.

Malone, while admitting to speaking in riddles before on the issue, said there are a lot of learned people who have remained quiet and on the backbench and chided them for doing so.

People don’t want to hear Carvin and Claude

Malone argued that the BVI has more lawyers and administrators per capita than anywhere else in the world, because “we have invested in a lot of people”.

“Everyone is sitting back and waiting either for the error or waiting for ‘I told you so’, or thinking that it does not matter,” Malone said.

The legislator said he felt that this was a big part of the complicity that exists around the territory where advancement is concerned.

Malone further argued that persons in the territory no longer wish to hear from traditional political voices.

“I’m saying that the population doesn’t necessarily want to hear Carvin Malone or they don’t want to hear Claude Skelton Cline. They want to hear another voice of reason.”

He added: “Another voice which says well ‘okay, fine, yes or no or here is another way for us to look at it’.”

No Sir! You just worked hard to get people in government that would give you what you want. You didn’t care about whether they were competent or not. You did what you always do, look out for yourself. The party system hasn’t failed. It is bad citizens like you that continue to make choices based on what’s in it for you. People like you failed the system and failed the country.

It is true that our political parties have no fundamental foundations in the political and economic sense.

Are they classic liberal? Conservative? Labour or Social Democratic?

    No. None of the above.

None of those labels apply to either the VIP or the NDP because neither has a core philosophy on which they build their manifestos… That is, no core philosophy that has been anything other than “what’s in it for me”, coupled together with “we pay out to our supporters”.

Maybe I can use just this one word for either party’s philosophy: AVARICE! And that’s the reason or government is in the state it’s in today.

I don’t think it is the party system so much as the politicians. How many of our politicians will change party on request for a little bit more power? Our current Premier has run for public office for three different parties in his career.

How many of our politicians have switched sides over the years: Maduro-Caines, Mark Vanterpool, Eileene Parsons, Ronnie Skelton – even Ralph O’Neal and Lavity Stoutt did it. Our politicians are more than happy to switch sides if it personally benefits them. No wonder the party system doesn’t work.

I am not defending this shit-show political system in any way shape or form, but all those others which you mention are also abject failures globally. We need “by the people, for the people” nothing else will work.

  10. HRMPH says:

Didn’t the Overspend get contracts from both parties, and didn’t the COI say that they were fraudulent?

  12. Resident says:

The party system did not fail. The politicians did. The leaders failed their members, the members failed their constituents. You have to have some form of loyalty mutual respect and above all integrity which these folks don’t have.

  21. Shine light says:

And that’s it, in a nutshell. Like most of the parties in the rest of the Caribbean at this point in time, they have no ideology except for personal greed. They have no overarching aims and no overarching vision of upliftment for the society except in so far as they can see how it will benefit them and their families.

@purified. You got that right. You smashed it over the boundary. This is one man without shame. I believe he gets a high from negative comments. You would think that his knife or someone close to him would tell him enough already.

  25. They Will Crucify You says:

for speaking truth to power but if you are not prepared to look at religion and the church you are just faking it. This is the narrative that has the masses bound and perpetuates the status quo. Until we can recognize and admit it we will continue to do the next best thing…see what you can get.

  26. @ Resident says:

I am no fan of CSC. I think he is very selfish and self-centered but he has to be treated in the right manner nonetheless. The COI report if you have read it you will see is very bias in many areas. What is written is not gospel and so we cannot call for any one to get locked up from it. If the police has evidence upon which to prosecute then they should lay charges and bring the matter before for the court. Every single person must have their day in court before we condemn them. Claude is no saint and the UK and Hickinbottom are certainly not saints either. Hopefully our eyes will open up about those UK people before we allow them to get a more vast foothold in our home.

  27. Lily ann says:

  28. Truth says:

His leave of entitlement is astonishing. Listen I guess this is a free country and everybody has a right to speak. I’m just tired of hearing from this one who thinks he fooling everybody. God will Judge you one day.
