Premier announces plans to sponsor Caribbean Baking Awards

Premier Dr. Natalio Wheatley has announced plans to sponsor the Caribbean Baking Awards (CBAs) in February 2025.

In the Facebook broadcast this week, Dr Wheatley, who is also the Minister of Tourism and Finance, stated that he is not only sponsoring the event but is also willing to pay double the amount he previously sponsored in 2023.

“I don’t think I should make a habit of just announcing how much I’m giving various businesses; when people make proposals, we evaluate those proposals based on what we can see as the overall merits of it,” the Premier stated.

“Based on what I saw from the Glasgows last year, I’m very happy to double what I gave them next year,” the Premier added.

The Caribbean Baking Awards celebrates the finest bakers and confectioners in the region, recognising excellence and creativity. It will take place on February 21 and 22, 2025. This annual event, now in its second year, is organised by Shanda Webster-Glasgow will be held at the Multi-Purpose Sports Complex in Road Town. The awards gala will feature nominees from various Caribbean islands, including the BVI, with 70 bakers nominated and eight from the BVI.

An Ultimate Bake Off will take place on February 21, with the theme “Rum Fun,” requiring competitors to infuse their cakes with rum from their respective islands.

The awards ceremony will follow on February 22.

Dr Wheatley announced his intentions to offer financial backing to the CBAs amid public concern over his decision to sponsor $220,000 for a concert with controversial dancehall artiste, Vybz Kartel.

OK but let us know that we can make proposals. You have some people applying for grant 100k split between 30 applications and others making proposal in excess of 100k to one business.

  4. SMH says:

He spending that money like it going to vanish. BVI will not meet that loan agreement, thus the future of the Territory lies unknowingly in distress.

  5. Wat says:

So we got money to sponsor everything but we can’t sponsor better roads, better infrastructure, a proper running medical centre for VG,

Is the premier using his own money?

  7. Food & Beverage says:

providers usually sponsor this type of competition IF it benefits their business. No way this competition will financially benefit the BVI government.
