Premier decries East End double murder

Premier and Seventh District Representative, Dr Natalio Wheatley.

Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley has denounced the double murder that happened on the eastern end of Tortola last Friday, October 21. Premier Wheatley urged the public to give information to the police to bring the perpetrators to justice.

The police have not yet disclosed the motive for the shooting which claimed the lives of two men and injured two others who were at the scene.

The deceased gunshot victims have been identified as 28-year-old Kadeem Frett of Long Look and 28-year-old Kawa Cornwall of Long Bush.

Premier Wheatley said the shooting is a great tragedy and called for the community to support the families who were affected by the incident.

“One of the young men who lost his life is a cousin of mine and also one of my constituents and certainly this tragedy has impacted his family greatly. He just buried his grandmother and one of his children lost their mother already — so that child is without a father or mother,” Premier Wheatley explained.

“I send sincere condolences to his family as well as the family of the other young man who lost his life,” Premier Wheatley added.

He called the community to turn away from violent acts and find better ways to resolve conflict.

The shootings last weekend brings the BVI’s murder count to six since the start of 2022.

They come amid public backlash the Police Commissioner is facing for a leaked viral video he was recently working on, which portrayed the BVI as a crime-infested place.

Some residents were offended by the video and called for action to be taken against the Commissioner. However, Governor John Rankin confirmed that a formal investigation was done and it was determined the Commissioner did not commit any criminal offences.

In the meantime, some sections of the community have expressed that the viral video about crime in the BVI simply tells the truth about happenings in the community.

    A very sad occurrence!

What happened to mandatory sentencing for firearm or ammunition possession? We need laws like Singapore:
” Anyone who illegally owns a gun or even ammunition faces a lengthy jail term in Singapore. The penalty for illegally owning ammo is five years. Firing a gun, even if you don’t injure anyone, can be punishable by the death sentence.”
Change “death sentence” to ten years with no parole, but make it such that anyone living in the same abode or associated with the incident gets the same sentence.
Gun violence will only stop when there are no more gins!!

Stay mad at the commissioner while protecting the people who commit these crimes. No one wants to come forward with info or speak with the young men, who are engaging in this lifestyle of killing. Yes, the BVI has become a dangerous place to live. FACTS. Do what is right as good citizens to fix the problems and stop blaming the Premier and the police. These young people have parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts and other relatives who need to talk to them or turn them in to the police if necessary. Laws can’t stop a person from killing another person. Reporting what you know to the police or turning that person in can help a lot more and allowing those laws to seek justice.

The extended range of the show is growing at an unimaginable rate. Let’s give the police a break and look at reality over the many years. This movement is way larger than a team of police. The military is more like it. That’s impossible. I know.

HAD TO HAPPEN THOSE WITH DIRTY HANDS/ MENTALITY ETC ,REALLY BELIEVES THAT ( SWEEPING ) THEIR DIRTY LAUNDRY UNDER THE RUG WILL CLEAN IT / SO THIS IS THE RESULTS ,YOU CAN PRETEND AS MUCH AS YOU LIKE / WE ARE IN IT

  7. Rap sheet says:

Instead of crying perhaps more could have done for your cousin while he was racking up a list of crimes. Ensuring high school is full time, trade school, access courses, working with supermarkets, public works and other large employees for entry level jobs anything that makes sure we dont loose these young men to the gangs.

  8. Secret Bear says:

Shutting down the economy for two years during Covid certainly didn’t help. I know for a fact that more young men turned to crime during that period than during any other time, simply because they had no other options. But hey, at least their shooting victims didn’t die of Covid.

  9. @SMH says:

That is part of their agenda. Spread propaganda that will sway the people so they don’t rebel when they invade with their military and take over.
It is the devious and propaganda intents of the video to set the ground work for the UK’s whole take over of the BVI and all its Financial resources for the benefit of UK and its people.

Sadly, their exit from the EU Union, was very bad news for the territory, and our financial potentials yet underdeveloped have them staring with eagle eyes with out stretched fangs.

Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it. This is applicable to all of society, we need also to be our brother’s keeper and to put the Territory first, The Territory is bigger that all of us combined and we ought not to permit anyone to injure our land. Shielding vagabonds must have no place amongst us. The police needs to do better in upping their their relationship within our communities and they are not near professional the officers we had throughout the 1990’s especially most of the expatriate officers that served us. Past commissioners breathed a high level of ignorance and incompetence and by their poor functioning hastened the departure of talented officers. Those stalwarts could have built a better cadre of officers who had cultivated trust between the Force and community solving most gun crimes and murders. i will just list one officer for now: Rupert Butcher formerly of Guyana, the USA benefits from his forensic skills. Nothing happens in a vacuum, find a trusted person to share and expose those smearing the BVI.
