Premier mum on possible 2026 election date

Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley has declined to indicate whether the BVI will head to the polls this year, telling reporters his focus remains on completing his government’s agenda before any election is called.

Dr Wheatley made the remarks during a recent press conference when a reporter asked directly whether the territory could hold a general election in 2026.

“My intent is to complete whatever it is I said I would complete for the people of the Virgin Islands. That’s my intent,” Dr Wheatley responded when asked about the possibility of a 2026 polling date.

When asked what priorities he hopes to complete before returning to the electorate, the Premier pointed to commitments outlined in his administration’s manifesto. “You have to look at the manifesto. When we look at the manifesto, that’s what I said I would do, and my intent is to finish as many of those items as possible,” Dr Wheatley stated.

When the reporter again asked whether specific projects could be named, the Premier declined to elaborate and indicated that discussion of elections would come later. “I’ll leave that for right now. There’ll be time enough to speak about all of the election rhetoric. I know people are getting excited. We’re getting close to that time,” Dr Wheatley said.

Under the Virgin Islands Constitution, general elections must be held at least every four years unless parliament is dissolved earlier. The last general election took place in April 2023, meaning the next constitutionally required election is due by 2027.

However, speculation has intensified in recent months about the possibility of a snap election before the end of the current term.

Several political commentators and public figures have weighed in on the matter. Talk show host and commentator Claude Skelton Cline has suggested that political momentum could lead to an earlier election if the government seeks a renewed mandate.

Premier Wheatley recently indicated that the groundbreaking for the much-talked-about Prospect Reef project will take place before the next election. However, he declined to be drawn on whether any projects should be used as a benchmark to gauge when his administration’s work is sufficiently advanced.

With the timing of the next election uncertain, public discussion about a possible early vote continues to grow across the territory’s political landscape.

He has already put NDP supporters in key positions, which has allowed him not to get anything done, allegedly.

The people are fed up of the whole thing from the Governor’s office through the House of Assembly down to the ministries, departments, and statutory boards.

The people are disappointed with how this country has come.

He couldn’t even say what he was going to accomplish, or ev3n what he promised to do. “Look at the manifesto”, because he clearly has no idea either.
